Welcome to Cengage Learning’s “How do I get my test banks into D2L using Cognero?”
This is an installment of the Digital Course Support self-training video series for Instructors.
Our agenda for this video is to guide you through the steps of
Exporting your test bank from Cognero. Importing your test bank into D2L by using a Cognero
exported bank, or by using test bank files from your Cengage instructor companion site,
and lastly, creating a test from your new bank.
Once you have opened a test or test bank in Cognero, from the Editor Pane, select File
and Export and then Blackboard 7.1+. This will create a zip file with the bank
of questions. Choose to save it to your hard drive, flash drive, or network drive. For
this example I’ll save to my Desktop because it’s easiest to locate.
If available, you can also use the test bank files located in your Instructor Companion
site. Open the Instructor Companion site from inside your Instructor Resource Center account
at Cengage. Locate the Test Bank link on the left, read and accept the licensing agreement,
and then choose to save the “Blackboard Test Bank Files.” These will include all
the chapter test banks for your text book. Please note, to upload the chapter test banks,
you must extract them from the zip file, and upload chapter by chapter.
Next, log into your D2L Instructor account and select the course you wish to import the
test bank into. Click “Edit Course” from the menu bar at the top. Under “Site Resources”
select “Import/Export/Copy Components.” Under “What would you like to do?” Select
“Import Components” Choose “Select from a File” and click “Browse” to locate
the question bank file you saved earlier. Click Start. On the following preprocessing
screen you will be able to view the progress of downloading and reading the package. When
finished, click Continue to go to the “Select Course Material” screen.
You do not need to change the directory to import the file to, leave that field blank.
You can leave the remaining fields as they are, but check import metadata.
Under the heading “Select components to import”, check the box “Select all components.”
Check the box next to “Question Library” and select “Import all items” Click Continue
and confirm import selections. Click Continue. Click Continue again on the
“Importing Course Material” screen, then click Finish. On the “Import summary screen,
you will receive a successful message. Click Done. Immediately, you will be brought back
to the “Import/Export/Copy Components” where you can continue to upload additional
question banks.
To create a test, select the Quizzes option from the menu bar at the top. Choose “New
Quiz”. Type a name for the quiz, and choose whichever preferences you would like from
this screen as well as going through the various tabs to set additional options. To add the
questions from the pool that was just uploaded, select the “Layout/Questions” tab.
Note that when you change tabs you'll get a “Saved Successfully” popup.
Now click on “Add/Edit” questions and click “Import.”
On this screen, in the drop-down menu for the “Import Source” choose "From an existing
collection." Under the drop-down menu for “Source Collection” select “Question
Library.” Last, from the “Section Selection” drop-down menu, choose your question bank.
You will now see all questions from that bank. Check the box next to the question bank name
to select all the questions, or select individual questions by checking the box next to the
question. Click Save when finished and you will be presented with your new quiz.
From here you can choose to Move, Delete, Reorder, Edit values, or move to a Learning
Object Repository (LOR). Click on the question to make any edits and when finished, click
Done. Choose to repaginate your questions, Add/Edit additional questions, and edit the
point values. When finished, click Save and Close. On the
Quizzes page, make sure to select your new quiz by checking the box next to it, and click
the Edit link to make the quiz active for your students.
Remember, you will need to repeat this process to import additional chapter test banks into
your D2L course. Thanks for taking the time to review this
self-training video and we hope you found it helpful. Be sure to check out our other
