Truth is not just knowledge you find without having to work for it.
You must be prepared to make even a greater sacrifice when this is found than you did
to find it. This is strange, an enigma, but truth has
two poles. It must have in order to have balance.
At the exact intersection point of positive and negative lines of mental force, consciousness
is produced. Consciousness is capable of that faculty of
discrimination which eventually produces truth. Truth can only be found by a true approach.
Before man can gain a true meaning of things, that man must be true to himself.
There are many people who search through books, whether they be The Twelve Blessings, The Baghavad
Gita, The Upanishads, for what they consider to be truth.
And yet these books to them are filled with so many printed words.
They may just as well read a newspaper; unless they be true to themselves.
Like all things truth is born within a man and unless you carefully tend the seed and
plant it in your heart, it will like every physical seed wither.
So the first lesson that we should learn if we would gain the true meaning of things,
if we would fortify ourselves in such a way that we cannot be led astray, that we would
not be led from the narrow path to this inner realization, the path to a greater expansion,
the path to the real meaning of things, we must start by being true in all things; by
tending carefully this seed within ourselves. There is no doubt that as A Man Thinketh so He is.
Your innermost thoughts come into manifestation
sooner or later. There is a wonderful story of a man who met
a great Yogi. The Yogi said, "I will grant you one wish,"
and the man said, "I would be very rich." So the Yogi replied: "I will grant you this
as a lesson." The man became very rich and he caught an
incurable disease and spent all his riches trying to get himself cured.
Make your thoughts good! Now this sounds very easy.
It’s easy to talk about. It’s almost hypocritical to talk about.
And yet gradually, slowly, with perseverance, with a certain Spiritual intensity, if applied
often enough in the right manner, your thoughts can be made good.
You can change your thought pattern. You can lead your basic self into the realms
of truth. And once you begin to turn away from all else;
once you have proved that you will sacrifice everything on the altar of truth, you will
find it. There is no doubt that you will find it.
The Law while being just is also compassionate in this respect.
So truth, my friends, is not something that can always be found in surroundings of glamour.
You may find it in a slum, or you may find it in a great temple.
There will come a time in your journey through experience, when the seed has been planted
firmly within you heart, tended with the greatest care, when the whole of your mental and physical
intensity has been turned in the direction towards truth, when you will pass through
certain experiences of initiation. You will know woe, sadness and you will suffer.
You will know what it is to weep for mankind and for his foolishness.
There will come times when in your great journey towards this mysterious light, you will be
filled with such heartrending grief that you will want to turn away from it. But my friends,
if you continue, you will find truth. And the more truth you find, the more you
will find that it is lasting. The woe and suffering will be only a part
of the whole experience pattern. If you go through this successfully, you will
come out fully tempered, fully prepared to face all of life’s experience.
Or you will virtually go from this life into a more expansive life.
One last word. There will come a time when a wonderful Being
will appear before you. Right down through the ages, as you know,
the symbol of truth has been a two-edged sword. This Being will form in front of you, this
two-edged sword. And you will either pick it up or you will leave it.
It depends on you how long it will take between now and some future time before it is offered
to you. May I say this. Unless you, each one of you,
be true to yourself, to your highest principles. Unless you speak truth, forgetting the cost,
and we all know that it costs much. Unless you do these things, you will never come unto
the threshold of the initiation of which I speak.
Because you see, it would not be good for you if you did.
For once you reach out and pick up that mystical sword, then you put yourself in the position
of being almost alone in the world. To be in this position needs more courage
than most people realize. Therefore, take to truth, as the Yogi says.
Speak truth and you will be led to the true meaning of all things.
Out of ignorance into a greater, fuller, more complete wisdom.
