So, Billy Janniro coming to the startline for the first heat of the night. Janniro off
the outside gate position, so straight away Billy Janniro is up against it here in the
first heat of the night. It’s Gary Hicks off gate number one, next to him it’s Nate
Perkins, John Marquez off gate number three, Mike Bloom off gate four and Janniro –
the National Champion – off the outside.
And it’s Janniro who makes a great start, but he’s forced very, very wide by John
Marquez. Mike Bloom seizes the opportunity to cut up the inside and move through into
third place, but Gary Hicks has stolen a march here in heat number one. Janniro now through
into fourth position.
Of course, five rider races in the USA, and Costa Mesa Speedway playing host to some of
those exciting races that we see with that kind of number of riders in a heat. Billy
Janniro now through into third position, he’s cut a way past Mike Bloom, but it doesn’t
look like he’ll get to Gary Hicks with one lap to go. Hicks leads it, Janniro now dives
up the inside and into second position going into bend number one – that was a great
move from Billy Janniro. But it’s Gary Hicks who’s going to go to an untroubled victory,
Gary Hicks the forty year old, five time US National Championship medallist. And he’s
showing some of the form that we’ve seen from him in the past. He sat out most of last
season due to injury, he starred in the Fair Derby here at Costa Mesa Speedway, and gets
off to a perfect heat one race result with a victory, and puts four points next to his
name. Billy Janniro cuts through from the back after being forced very, very wide –
we’ll see it again here – Janniro forced very wide, picking up all sorts of grip, riding
very hard and tagging the fence, indeed, coming out of bend number two. John Marquez losing
a position here and Janniro then taking another one off him as Janniro fights the way through,
we see here up the inside of Mike Bloom, and eventually towards three points.
