Cracks in teeth are exceedingly common....
Some appear vertically on the front teeth
and white composite filling material is required to repair the cracks
However,
most cracks appear under old silver fillings in the back teeth
Cracks can lead to the following symptoms:
Pain on biting, especially on release of bite
Sensitivity with hot and cold temperatures
Fracture of a tooth or in severe cases
constant nerve pain if the crack has travelled to the nerve of the tooth
Sometimes the tooth pain goes if the fractured part just snaps away
To prevent teeth from breaking
Cracks should be protected from fracturing
This can be commonly done by
adding adhesive white composite material
into the cavity which bonds the tooth tightly, preventing the cracks from propogating.
These old silver fillings were painful on biting on them
and this indicated that there may be cracks under them
The fillings were removed
and cracks were seen under them
New, white, adhesive composite fillings were placed in the teeth for protection
Sometimes the best option is to
place a crown over the fractured tooth for ultimate long-term protection of the crack.
