Since 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant has funded applied research
at colleges and universities across the state.
Sea Grant's mission is to develop fundamental knowledge, technology, trained
personnel, and public awareness to advance the sustainable use of coastal
and marine resources and environments.
The program also engages university expertise in natural and social sciences,
engineering, law, and other disciplines to address the needs of public agencies,
businesses, and Louisiana's citizenry.
Some notable research projects Louisiana Sea Grant has funded include the
identification, isolation, and testing of a compound found in oysters
that arrest breast cancer cells,
the development of a model to rapidly assess economic damage from natural
disaster such as hurricanes,
and the use of wetlands to treat wastewater, a process that also
strengthens the wetlands.
Other research has focused on aqua culture, coastal erosion and restoration,
invasive species, oil spills, and coastal zone management
The goals and objectives identified in Louisiana Sea Grant's strategic plan
guide researchers concerning topics the program would like to address during the
upcoming federal omnibus funding cycle.
Objectives are stated in fairly general terms to provide reasonable latitude for
researchers to exercise creativity in their applications
while remaining sufficiently focused to channel funding into areas that hold the
greatest potential impact.
Faculty at any public or private Louisiana college or university can
submit an omnibus research proposal for up to one hundred eighty thousand dollars
for a two year federal funding cycle.
Program development proposals are accepted annually and may not exceed ten thousand dollars.
Louisiana Sea Grant is one of 32 Sea Grant programs sponsored by the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
If a state is located on the coast, whether it's the ocean, the Gulf of
Mexico, or the Great Lakes, it has a Sea Grant program.
