50 youth basketball teams from all over the country
have converged on the Rotorua Sports Stadium to test their skill,
and Hinerangi Goodman was there.
Colliding with each other is all part of the game.
This is a game between the disabled senior teams
from Auckland and Waikato.
The best part of it all is in the feeling
of it being by Maori, for Maori.
The beauty here is to encourage the spirit of whanau.
Even though they are playing a competitive sport.
The inaugural basketball tournament for Maori
where teams from all over Aotearoa
have come together under the one banner.
What we want is to bring together all teams
from the four corners across Aotearoa,
including children, adults and the disabled.
These two teams from Auckland and Rotorua are both going hard out.
It's a special occasion
to have so many people from all over the country.
My family has come to support all of them.
It is so wonderful to be here amongst it all
to meet up and to be here to meet up with all our friends.
I like the spirit of coming together as family meeting new people,
other girls, friends and others.
We are so lucky and because they are so dedicated to the sport.
Tainui-Waikato donated all these trophies for everyone.
The tournament will close tomorrow,
after which the winners and alike will be announced.
Hinerangi Goodman, Te Karere.
