If you want to bring some light to your garden and make it look fabulous at night, I'll show
you a few different ways. With garden lights, you have two types. 240-volt,
which must be installed by a licensed electrician. Or, if you want to give it a go yourself,
you've got 12-volt or solar lights. If you want to install a 12-volt system, you
need to know how many lights you're going to use as well as what distance you need to
cover. Once you know that, you can choose a transformer and type of cable you'll need.
For example, if you want to use three 20-watt lights, you would use a 60-watt transformer.
If you're running your lights over a short distance, you'll need a standard cable. But
over a long distance, you'll need to use a heavy duty cable.
Here's a tip, buy a bigger transformer than you need. That way you can add lights later.
A simple way is just to use a 12-volt kit. A cable-free alternative is to use solar lighting.
When installing garden lighting, you start off by putting the lights in the garden approximately
how far apart you want them to be. Next, lay out your cable in front of your lights but
remember to leave enough cord so you can get to your transformer.
Once you've laid your cable, you start by connecting the light that's the furthest from
the transformer. Next, plug in your transformer to check that the light's working. If it is,
then unplug your transformer and continue on with the rest of the lights.
Each garden lighting system is different but the principle is the same. You start by pushing
your cable out through the stand. Connect your light fitting in accordance to
instructions that come with your lights. Then turn it up and put your spike in. Put
your top on. And just put it in the ground where you want it.
Bury your cable in the lawn or cover it with mud, and then you're done.
