Hey what's up guys, this is David Benjamin from healthywildandfree.com,
today i'm going to talk about the health benefits of pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, I
don't know if that's spanish or, well it is spanish, it's specifically comes from Mexico.
Pumpkin seeds were discovered about 7,000 BC by mexican archeologists in caves, kind
of crazy, but the interesting and cool things about pumpkin seeds is that there's a huge
variety of health benefits and it's actually one of the only foods on the planet that becomes
more nutritionally valuable essentially as it ages. So if you let pumpkin seeds sit for
3, 4, 5 months, the actual nutritional count, some of the nutritional counts, in the pumpkin
seeds actually increase, specifically protein after 5 months of having pumpkin seeds, the
protein count increases.
So, how are pumpkin seeds nutritionally valuable and what do you get out of pumpkin seeds by
putting them in your diet?
The first and one of the most beneficial aspects of pumpkin seeds is that pumpkin seeds are
anti-parasitic foods, so, if you have parasites or tapeworms like 97% of the population does,
pumpkin seeds are a great food to include in your diet, to actually help to reduce and
fight and kind of remove parasites and tapeworms from the body.
And parasites and tapeworms are huge health problems and issues and they cause all sorts
of health challenges in the body, they eat nutrients, they harm your sleep, they do all
sorts of things that cause a lot of, a variety of health problems. Beyond that, pumpkin seeds
are great source of manganese, magnesium, which many people in america specifically
and other countries too, but specifically america are deficient in magnesium, they are
a great source of zinc, of iron, copper and also phosphorus which is a great and important
mineral for bone, for creating healthy bones, your arteries and things like that, same with
magnesium, your heart health with magnesium and phosphorus.
So manganese, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iron and copper, and it's a great source of
protein as well. Beyond that, pumpkin seeds are a great source of tryptophan, which tryptohpan
is an amino acid that is responsible for kind of the production of serotonin and melatonin
which are two different hormones that are kind of regulates sleep and awake cycles.
Serotonin is known as the 'happy hormone' so kind of your awakens, alertness, having
mental cognitive energy, that's kind of more serotonin, but then serotonin also helps in
the production of melatonin which is the hormone that your body needs for sleep, for healthy
sleep.
So, L-Tryptophan, the amino acid is the kind of base catalyst for serotonin and melatonin
production and pumpkin seeds are a rich source of l-tryptophan.
Beyond that pumpkin seeds like I said are anti-parasitic, rich in many different kind
of minerals, protein and other things along those lines. But beyond that, zinc it's also
a great source of zinc which zinc is a very important mineral for the body overall, just
repairing the body, healing the skin, and it's also a very important mineral for the
prostate, so as far as great food for men, pumpkin seeds are an amazing food for men.
It's also good for women too though because it helps with pre-menopause, because it's
rich in different nutrients, I believe it's rich in Vitamin K I want to say that kind
of helps with pre-menopause and things like that.
It's also an amazing food for balancing cholesterol because they found that it reduces LDL cholesterol
which is kind of the quote on quote "bad cholesterol" there's no really good or bad cholesterol,
but it kind of really just helps to balance your LDL and HDL levels.
It's good for cholesterol, it's good for removing parasites, it's a rich source of minerals
and proteins, it's also a great source of L-Tryptophan which helps serotonin and Melatonin
production which is healthy for your sleep in general.
If you want to have better sleep, more minerals and protein in your diet, and something that's
just great for removing parasites and all of these different things, definitely include
pumpkin seeds in your diet, they are a great snack, they are easy to come by. I recommend
eating organic all the time if you can, if you can afford it.
Just include them in your diet, and one thing you can do as well, this is something that
I do, that I highly recommend is to soak your seeds, you can soak your seeds. Pumpkin seeds
all I do is put them in this glass jar and seal it and I put water in it and I let this
sit for about 24 hours and then I open the top and I pour the water out, and you do that
because what you're doing by soaking the seeds is actually removing the anti-nutrients within
the nuts or seeds.
Nuts and seeds have what are called anti-nutrients like phytic acid, p-h-t-y-i-c acid for example
which kind of constrains the ability for the minerals to be kind of used and absorbed.
So, nuts and seeds have minerals in them, but the phytic acid is an anti-nutrient that
hampers that, so by soaking the nuts and seeds you're removing the anti nutrients, when you
pour that liquid, that water out of what's been soaking gin the nuts or seeds, it removes
that phytic acid or anti nutrients which allows for more mineral absorption.
So that's a great thing to do for any nuts or seeds, just soak them, remove the water
and let them dry out, air dry or put them in a… what's it called, I forget what it's
called, the dehydrator, put them in a food dehydrator and let them dry out and then you
can have those as a snack, put those back in the same bag it came in, put them back
in the same bag or just put them in a ziplock bag or whatever or include them in recipes,
you can even have them in smoothies and things like that.
So, include pumpkin seeds in your diet, a great source of minerals, proteins, anti-parasitic,
great for your cholesterol levels, great for prostate health, great for pre-menopause,
and great for producing, great source of tryptophan which is great for serotonin and melatonin
production, your hormones regulating sleep and awake cycles and things like that.
