My experience in the motorycle driving license
Canyons of Hérault / October, 2017
Hi guys! Today, day 4 in my series about my
experience in the motorcycle driving license. Yesterday I explained how
I got the license and today I am going to
explain what happen after the license
4. Post-licensing
The motorcycle driving license requires
a 20-hour training in two parts: off-traffic and
on the road. Until 2016, if you had more than 24 you could
go straight to the A license with unrestricted power. This is no longer the case in France
Today, everyone has to get first the A2 license to drive
a 35 kW bike, and you have to wait two more years
to take an additional course for upgrading to the A license
Having the license, all monitors will tell you, and
most bikers are also aware of this,
when you enroll to the motorcycle training, you are not going
to learn how to ride a motorcycle, but how to get the motorcycle driving license
and this is a big difference! You know what exercises you
have to do the day of the exman, you know you need to operate
an emergency braking, you know you need to dodge a plastic cone at 50 km/h
everything is prepared and repeated again and again, the hours you are going to spend are
hours to learn these exact exercises, of course, there are
supposed to remind a door that opens by a headless driver
An emergency braking simulate
a priority saw at the last moment
these are actual cases that have been translated into an exam
but even if you got your license after 20, 30
or 40 hours if you have some difficulties, you are not a pilot,
you do not have experiences, you are not a professional driver
you are not a skilled pilot only because you
get the motorcycle driving license and it is important, we must be aware of that
I did not want to pass the motorcycle driving license too young
I had this progressive stage with the training for a 125 cc motorcycle
allowed me to ride a 2-wheel among the traffic,
be aware of all the dangers,
yes, when it is raining you must avoid pedestrian crossings
or manhole covers because it will be slippery, these are the things that
in a car you do not need to worry about,
a car is more stable, there will be no problem
One thing I found good with the generalization of the A2 license is
it imposed, after 2 years of experience,
to take a 7-hour training to be eligible for the A license
When I said "imposed" no, nothing is imposed, you
can make your whole life with the A2 license, but if you want
a more powerful motorcycle you have to. So yes it's an
additional cost, of course, but you can count it in the overall cost
when you pass the A2 license, you know you're going to add 250 €
two years later to upgrade to the A license. A point
annoys me, is the inequality between motorcycles and cars, the car driving license,
when you have it, you can drive any car, for the motorcycle driving license
you can not. This precise point, the inequality,
is bad, but the progressive access to the power, that's a very good point
Some motorcycle training, for the upgrade to A license,
organize course on a real race track
The race track is not the answer to all problems, including the fact
that the race track is a one-way track, everyone
are going in the same direction, so you are sure nobody will come across
So the paths are totally differents, you are not on an
open road, there is no pedestrians, no obstacles,
so the race track may be a very good
exercise to improve your skill, to take a better curves, to control
your motorcycle, the speed, how to brake, but this is not the
answer to everything, you can be very good on the track, but also be very
bad on the road because on the road, you need to be more attentive
to external elements while on race track you are sure to be alone
with other motorcycles around you, so there will be no danger
The most important thing for me, and it is perhaps this element that decided me
to release this series on my experience of the motorcycle driving license,
is really to be aware that when
you register for the motorcycle driving license, at the end of the exam, you will not be a
very good driver, you will just have the right to drive on the road
among other cars and bikes, and no, you will not be
an expert and unfortunately if you want to do more trainings
after, with the A2 license there is an upgrade to the A license,
but if you want to do advanced courses, it is
very hard to find, you have the race track as I also
have said, but for many people, the race track is like a sport,
for the speed, and it's not to learn how to drive better, or to better control your motorcycle
last year I release a video with the rally
gendarmerie organized by a local police company
at Palavas, it is an annual event, and
you can find this kind of initiatives all over the country
and I think it's great, it's like a free event because the
registration fee is only for the food, the meal,
it is a full day where the police will advise you,
look at you, give you techniques to improve your skills,
they are very good initiatives and
unfortunately, there are not too many, I never see motorcycle training do
courses for people with the driving licence, but yes, I imagine it must
exist but who is willing to pay to learn how to better drive without
having a license at the end? And I think many would be ready to
pay half the price to have half of the training hours
And if the monitor tells you that you could have your license with 20 hours but
suggest doing more than 40 hours to get a better level but
you will have to pay twice, most of you will say no! Everything is
directed by the cost, by money, people want to have a license as cheap as possible
So again, when you have the license, yes, you have the right to
drive but it not a reason to overestimate you, it is
very important to be accompanied, perhaps by other bikers,
with more skills to take some advices
And what really helped me, and this will be the subject for the tomorrow's video
is YouTube and the instructive aspect that represents videos
found on YouTube! So be ready for tomorrow at 5 pm for the final part of
this series about my experience in the motorcycle driving license
Well, see you tomorrow at 5pm
