Right this one is a question from tam519, thank you for your question. Housing benefit,
renting from family. If my parents purchase my house as I cannot afford a mortgage will
I be able to claim housing benefit or any other type of help with the rent. It's a great
question; it's good that you thought of this before actually happens. I think you may struggle
with this; obviously housing benefit regulations have tightened up quite a bit lately and certainly
in the area where I'm based if you formally owned a property and then living in it you
will find it quite difficult to get, if not impossible actually to get the housing benefit.
Also as your currently living in the house if your parents do buy it and have a formally
contract with you it may fall under what's called SAAB or sale and rent back regulations,
which is actually a very highly regulated sector of the market and it means that you
can't really buy a property and let someone stay in their that formally owned it. So what
I would suggest you do is really a complicated legal one, before you do anything I would
say speak to a solicitor about this SAAB aspect and see what they think about that and also
have a word with your local authority in the housing benefit department. Lots of local
authorities have different rules and regulations, as I say if you're in West Sussex where I
am I think you'd have a big problem, where you are you may not, so I hope that's the
case for you. But I think you need to take legal advice first before going any further
with that one.
