If there is a game genre that I would love to see make a triumphant return it would be
the beat ‘em genre. Few things are better than going through the streets, fighting,
punching and kicking everyone and anyone who stands in your way. They are also some of
the greatest multiplayer experiences out there. Well it appears that perhaps my dream is going
to be realized and the movement is off to a great start with Double Dragon: Neon.
This is an enhanced, update version of the original Double Dragon. The story is as simple
as rescue the princess. Your girlfriend, Marian, has been brutally kidnapped by the Black Warriors
gang. You take control of Marian’s boyfriend Billy, and you won’t stop until you succeed.
Another player can take control of Marian's other boyfriend Jimmy and join in on the fun
of smashing heads and taking names.
The game plays just like the original Double Dragon and I wouldn’t have it any other
way. You will go through the streets, punching, kicking and hurting everyone who gets in your
way. The game offers some new moves and abilities for you to play around with. You have a special
meter that you use to unleash a special attack. You can refill your meter by finding batteries
in the level. This is the old school beat ‘em up action that I can’t get enough
of. And it is brought to life with some great graphics. The characters are bright and detailed
and the levels look great. The 3D models work well and don’t interfere with the classic
gameplay.
There are is also a new music system that plays a major part. The game has an amazing
soundtrack, filled with more guitar riffs than you will know what to do with. It will
have you head-banging in a matter of seconds. But you can also adjust the soundtrack to
great benefits. Enemies will drop cassette tapes that you need to pick up. Each one will
change the music but also gives your characters a bonus, be it extra defense, additional strength,
or new special moves. It really encourages you to find them all and use them properly.
Be warned though. The game does come with a punishing difficulty that will surely test
your perseverance and patience. But it just makes the air guitar celebration all the sweeter.
Also the game is fairly short, and can easily be completed in a single sitting.
If you looking for a fix to your beat ‘em up addiction, than this will surely satisfy.
It is everything great about Double Dragon, just brought to life in a whole new way.
