We're always working on trying to make as many transportation options available on campus
as possible so we've worked on making the campus more walkable with things like the
esplanade extension, more bikable and provide free bike sharing program, Flash Fleet, and
we provide free bus service on campus and near campus so, um, having a car available
when you need one is just another piece of the puzzle. There are times when you really
do need a car but for many students, and even others near campus, it might not make financial
sense to have a car sitting there all the time when you only need a car occasionally.
So that was the idea behind bringing car sharing to campus. So the 1st thing you need to do
is become a member and you go onto the zipcar website, if you go to zipcar.com/kent there's
a page just for us and you can pick whether you are a student or a faculty, staff, or
community member and the reason you wanna do that is because if you're affiliated with
the university, you actually get a reduced rate, uh, for your membership. So once you
become a member, you get a Zipcard in the mail and, um, you go online when you wanna
reserve the car you can go online, use their app or use your phone to reserve a vehicle
and when your time comes for your reservation you use the Zipcard to unlock the vehicle
and the keys are inside.
Well, since I don't have a car it's very convenient to have transportation just in case. I use
it for shopping, uh, doctor's appointments, any small errands. I went to the movies with
this car and I like it, it's easy.
You can reserve the car for as little as an hour up to several days. Um, after you have
it out for about 8 hours it reverts to a daily rate instead of the hourly rate. It's expensive
to keep a car, um, you have maybe a car payment, car insurance, repairs, parking, and if you're
not using the car that frequently you might be able to save money by becoming a Zipcar
member and just reserving a car when you need one instead of having a car sitting there
all the time, not in use.
