Hi, I'm Stephen Monet, Manager of Environmental Planning Initiatives
with the City of Greater Sudbury
and this is EarthCare Minute. Part of being a good environmental steward
is about co-existing responsibly with wild animals such as Black Bears.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, residential garbage,
bird feeders and fruit trees are the leading causes a bear problems in Ontario.
Discourage bears from coming onto your property by waiting until garbage day to
put your garbage out,
by using a container with a tight-fitting lid. Only feed your pet indoors.
Don't have bird feeders between April first and November first when bears are active.
After you barbecue, remember to burn off all food residue,
scrape the grill, and empty the grease trap. In summer,
pick all ripe fruit and vegetables, and gather all fallen fruit.
Most bear problems can be averted. Visit the MNR Bearwise website to
learn more.
And, remember, dirty diapers are a major
bear attraction. EarthCare Minute. One minute is
all it takes. Brought to you by the City of Greater Sudbury.
