Hello and welcome back to another episode of osu!academy!
In today's episode, we will be going over 1st extra game mode to be added to osu!:
Taiko mode.
Taiko mode, is based on very popular rhythm game,
that had you smashing away on large drum to the beat of music.
And while we are on subject,
did you know? That taiko was a first, just a normal mod to start with
like hidden or double time.
it wasn't until later it was given its own game mode
and scoring metric that was changed twice during the development.
Taiko is also the first extra gamemode to be allowed its own ranked sets,
pathing the way for other extra game modes!
Taiko Mode Basic Controls
In this game mode, players hit the drum in time
with the red (Don) or blue (Katsu) notes on the screen.
Red notes indicate you must hit the middle of the drum (x or c on the keyboard's default controls)
and the blue notes indicate that you must hit the rims of the drum (z or v on the keyboard's default controls)
Large red or blue notes indicate
that you have to hit both sides of the drum
middle or rim according to the colour of the notes.
Long yellow notes
indicate a drumroll of either red or blue notes (user preference, usually most drumroll red for the middle)
These do not add to your combo or cause a combo break
if you choose not to drumroll throughout the entire length.
However, different from the rhythm game it was based on,
there are upper limits on number of hits on the slider
which is 4 times of the length of a slider,
that is indicated by the small stars or dots throughout the slider.
While it is 8 times of the length of the slider in songs
that are equal or lower than BPM125.
If the sliders are hit too fast,
no hit is recorded during the slider.
Therefore, it requires a good synchronicity hand coordination
and some note-reading skills to get all the drumroll hits.
As with other game modes,
we suggest you to start off with the easier map sets
but if your hands are feeling a bit cramped down there at the bottom of the keyboard
you can always change your key bindings in the options.
I personally like my taiko keybinds to be d,k for the outer rum
and f,j for the inner drum.
Well, that is all from us today at the academy, we hope to see you real soon!
