What if I told you
that building the world of our dreams, that making the world of our dreams come true,
can be quick and fun
don't you have to reach into your wallet
Ok, maybe you're thinking I am a little crazy,
let's look into it and see how it works
Do you think you deserve to live in a better world?
Please stand up
Those of you who think you deserve to live in a better world, stand up.
Look at this! If you think you deserve to live in a better world and you're here
and you feel that you can help
that you'd love to help with a talent that you have
a personal skill, please raise your right hand.
Do you think you have a talent, that you'd love to help
to build a better world, raise your right hand.
Good!
Look around you, how many people are...
you're not alone, wave to them,
look how many people want a better world,
it doesn't seem you're all alone in the world, does it?
Here at TED it's easy because everybody came all the way from their home to the Amazon,
and everybody is sort of an activist, aren't they?
Then, we say: "but the world is not interested in this,
people are not worried about it, the number of people we have here can't change the world
So, let's do this
Who, here, has a friend, or recalls a friend who's not here,
who no doubt will want to change the world
and will think in the same way as you do?
"I want a better world, I will change it".
Who thinks this? Look around you
and find this vibe in a friend, touch him.
Look around you,
and find the person who will represent your friend and touch him.
I always forget to tell you in the beginning,
I am a little nervous up here,
that the name of this game is "Touch 'n Stick".
So wherever your hand touches, it stays there.
So let's bring these friends here!
It's already twice as many people here in the room.
The number of people who want to change the world is increasing.
Now, the thing is, we have a lot more friends.
So bear with me. Raise your left hand.
Wave, if you're in, stay in.
Now, you will remember another friend,
very different from the first one,
who has totally different qualities, because diversity is important,
who would also like to join you and help
then, you look for another person, who you aren't touching yet, and touch this person.
and stay there! Touch 'n stick!
There you go
The number of people in the room has already tripled
the number of people to change the world is increasing!
But look!
There are those who are not that close,
but they have qualities which might help us a little.
So the thing is... you have lots of ways to help.
With your right foot.
You are going to choose a third person who you aren't touching yet
who will represent a friend of yours
who is very popular, knows lots of people
and will attract, if she joins us, lots of other people.
So touch that popular friend.
Touch him, ask for help.
Find a way, and touch 'n stick, don't let him go.
Everybody together!
Is it easy? Are you ok with it, everybody?
So, people,
I said that changing the world would be quick, fun and cost-free.
However, nobody said it would be easy.
With the left foot...
Aaaah, you've made it all the way from the Amazon and you can't do it with your left foot?
Your left foot will touch any other person near you, but connect.
Connect with more resources. Take the cameraman. There you go, Abujamra.
Is it easy?
Is it easy to change the world?
Now the thing is...
pay attention because I don't have much time.
The thing is, we keep thinking:
"changing the world is so complicated!"
it's simple. We still have resources left.
With your head, with your intelligence,
with your wonderful brain, which has to come with the actions,
you will find the nearest shoulder,
back and rest your head.
Rest your head there and stay comfortable
because we deserve to change the world very comfortably.
I'm going to count to three,
and, when I get to three, everybody will jump three times and then do a back flip.
Ok, thank you!
Very interesting, Edgard.
But what does all this nonsense have to do with changing the world?
how does this relate to that?
Here we go
In November, 2008, we suffered a terrible catastrophe in Brazil
Santa Catarina
Almost every Brazilian here will remember this.
It was the greatest disaster in the history of the State of Santa Catarina.
60 cities were under water
overnight.
135 people died.
Some are still missing today.
Almost 9300 people lost their homes.
The pain hit the people from Santa Catarina very hard.
However, what happened right afterwards was a great national mobilization
Do you remember this?
A great national mobilization and automatically
people from all over the country started to organize themselves
and send water, clothes, food.
Transport companies lent trucks,
airlines, aircrafts and very quickly, in record time,
everything arrived there.
Until then, everything went well. This occurred in various other places around the world, too.
However, a few weeks later, things began to cool down.
In fact, three months later,
people were still in need of shelter,
over 5000 of them still needed a place to stay.
Resources from the federal government had not yet arrived.
There was no newspaper, no TV program broadcasting the news
People were horribly depressed.
In spite of all the mobilization, all that effort from everywhere in the country,
the people from Santa Catarina were really sad.
And the people from Santa Catarina are very special
because they were very used to having floods,
they are very fast,
they clean an entire city in one or two days until it's brand new.
They are used to organizing themselves for that.
But this event was so catastrophic
that they became depressed and were unable to take action.
A group of friends and I,
we have this game of changing the world,
we used to play this game in communities.
But when we looked at the situation in Santa Catarina we said:
"Cool, how are we going to play now?"
We were sad for a little while as well but we suddenly said:
"No, we have to do something".
So, we decided to create a "game",
Santa Catarina Oasis, a real game that will change your life.
Here's what we thought
In the beginning, there were five of us and we said:
"what can we do to change Santa Catarina?"
Our idea, our focus was to get people to do something
to take them out of that depression,
to make people move, and get back to their lives.
How were we supposed to accomplish this? Five people?
The first thing we remembered was this:
There are a bunch of people, millions of them all over Brazil, who helped.
We are not alone in this.
So we started to create a "game" that would put several different groups together.
The people of the fire, those who watch something like this on TV and say:
"I want to go there, I want to help.
I want to get my hands dirty, I want to help those people".
So, these are people of the fire.
However, we need more than heroes these days.
Heroes or crazy people.
There were the people of the air. We helped to create another team,
made up of those who want to help, provide support but are unable to go there,
housewives...
"I'm at work", "I'd love to, but I'm not so young".
So, no problem, you will be able to help through the Internet!
Then, they subscribed online,
and engineers, designers, journalists, a lot of people organized themselves,
people who owned transport companies donated means of transport for the people
to take the fire people there.
And the third group, which was brilliant,
was the people of the land.
Those who were from Santa Catarina could not be treated as victims,
by taking a bunch of people there to help.
So, we wanted local partners,
who would join us in the game, play cooperatively and make a change.
The best partners we could help:
the children of Santa Catarina,
who were not so sad, just waiting for something,
so they became local partners
who would prepare a number of tasks to be carried out there.
We set up a free platform, because it has to be free,
a free platform on the internet,
and people would be able to subscribe to the teams of their choice.
Here's what we did:
everything that seemed difficult to us,
"how are we going to go there?"
"how are we going to train so many people
who don't know what they are doing, who have never been in a flood,
how to get to Santa Catarina, how to deal with diseases what to do?"
We created a sequence of tasks
which were in fact training for everyone to get organized.
For instance, set up the most diverse team possible
with at least five different disciplines
from the university. People had to manage.
Second, set up your network.
Each one of you has a lot of friends.
"Touch 'n stick", who can help you?
Your family, an engineer, an architect, a housewife,
will be able to help and give their support.
The network started to grow.
From 40, it went to 500 or 600 people who were willing to help
Everyone started to get excited about it.
One and a half months later, 3600 people
had already subscribed to play the game.
We tried to just do our part and everyone else joined us
and more than 30 university teams of fire from all over Brazil,
from Fortaleza to Rio Grande do Sul, said "We're in".
They subscribed. This made us a little happier.
Automatically in the network, participants started to set up connection systems.
"Ah, but it's just the website, it won't work. "
Those who complained were asked: "Ok, what are you going to do?"
"Ah, can I do something?" 'Yes'
Then, everyone started to develop visual communication
and strategies for change
Finally the great surprises came.
The first thing, the teams,
teams got so enthusiastic, so excited
that they began the task all by themselves.
"Ah, only 600 hundred members is not good enough"
So they left the city and started to do "free hugs"
and tell their whole cities
that the people from Santa Catarina needed help.
They set it up and put the challenge on the internet.
My team from Sao Jose dos Campos did the "free hug, how beautiful!"
"What are you going to do?" challenging the other team,
then the other team would do something worse,
Or better!
and that buzz began to spread
and more people would join the network, beautiful, "touch 'n stick".
When we were at the Sao Paulo Fashion Week,
they made us a "lounge",
a great world leader of trends made us a "lounge",
with several connections,
because we wanted to develop something that was cutting-edge in the world.
We were there beautiful at the Sao Paulo Fashion Week,
we started to look at the famous figures
and ended up coming out on Glorinha Kalil's blog.
The Oasis catches on
From that moment on it came out in the newspaper, and people started saying:
Who are these crazy folks going to Santa Catarina?"
"Is it for real? Is it a real game?
Are you going to Santa Catarina to build?" We are going there to build.
And so it went.
And the last one, which I though was the creme de la creme, "Mission Impossible"
A large telephone company,
and a large cell phone manufacturer were impressed by our story
there was no contract, nothing,
they didn't know who we were they didn't know our names
but they were excited about the whole story,
"we will donate 40 Magic Johnson cell phones to you!"
I've always wanted to play "Mission Impossible" since I was a kid!
We had video, satellite, we talked to each other,
in the community, how's it going? Over!"
We would solve each other's problems for free in the entire country,
we talked and our lives became much happier!
The top 12 teams in Brazil were chosen
They went to Santa Catarina, made transport arrangements on their own, took care of their own food,
we didn't help at all. That's the game! Do something on your own!
Do you want to be seen? Your award is to go to Santa Catarina,
because we can't!
Let's go! Integration and preparation.
We had to try and transform these people in a team, a good one, "touch 'n stick".
Two days of preparation in Blumenau, so that they got to know one another,
to make it a "Brazilian" mission, "Brazil goes to Santa Catarina". -
on the following day, the newspaper published exactly what we wanted.
We wanted to ignite people and the newspaper releases...
"Hope has arrived".
It really motivated us.
We split the teams and headed to the cities.
The first thing we did with them to ignite them
was not to get there and rebuild the city,
we wouldn't be able to rebuild the entire city.
But we asked what their dreams were.
We didn't want to know about their problems,
"it doesn't matter what your problem is"
"I want to know what your dream is, we go deep."
Then they started to dream and to choose something, we said:
"That's what we are going to build", and we had 5 days for it.
The first thing we do is to make them dream,
put this dream together, create a little model, a mock-up
with everybody participating.
After that, we have five days to build.
Hence, it happened like magic.
The community was waking up.
The children arrive first, they always want to help.
Later, parents come to see what is going on,
"why doesn't my son want to come home,
to watch tv or even to eat?"
Later, the mothers came, the teenagers,
and we went on building their dreams.
One of the dreams, for example, was to build a bridge.
We thought it was impossible.
Engineers, over the Internet, people from Sao Paulo, started to send
"think about this", "is there eucalyptus nearby?" "how are you going to do it"
they said it would be impossible to do it, we have five days,
"we can't build that dream".
They built the bridge in one day.
In fact, the community went out there and built it on one day.
And, not happy enough, they decided to make small gardens
to ornament the bridge, to make it beautiful, because we had time.
And they built more things.
they constructed motocross tracks, kiosks, soccer fields,
Brazilians love soccer, music and soccer.
Six cities, twelve communities, five days,
forty-three community meetings that nobody had arranged in six months.
As I told you, "quick, fun and cost-free".
Forty-three community meetings, twelve communities, six cities,
and donations, even our impossible cell phone.
After that, people enjoyed the gathering so much that they agreed on this:
"I don't want to go back, I don't..."
the whole group, which came from everywhere in Brazil, said:
"Our state isn't good either,
let's go back to our state and create more Oases.
everyone will have to go back to their state and create more Oases".
Over the next four months...
more than 90 Oases spread around the country and abroad.
People getting their hands dirty and communities making it all happen.
Now look
While playing, every one is an entrepreneur.
While playing, we all want to show, naturally,
without thinking too much, without fear, without too much effort,
the best version of ourselves.
When we are playing, we don't want to stop.
It's sustainable "I want more, I want more, I want more..."
the scale of challenges we face today.
The scale of the global challenge we face today,
is so large that there is no time for heroes,
leaders, activists, governments or bosses
We need everyone to do their best.
If we call people for sacrifice, work, priesthood
most of our friends...
Come on
It's not elegant to invite people to suffer.
We can invite them to a party to play
We can make great changes.
In very little time and without reaching for your wallet.
Thank you!
