three in Los Angeles police officers fatally shot
a mentally ill unarmed man after a high-speed pursuit
they tried to stop him for drunken reckless driving however obviously he
did not stop
and this the entire case ended after he got out of his vehicle
with his back turned to the police officers and he
momentarily put his hands up but not for long before the cops shot
they shot between 15 to 20 rounds and as I mentioned he did die as a result of
this
us the right now there's an internal investigation within the LAPD they're
trying to figure out whether or not there was excessive force here
%uh the person who shot and killed was Brian newt Baird
and KTLA covered the entire pursuit
and what I found fascinating about their coverage was the fact that they did not
cutaway as he was being shot and as he laid bare
dead yet now look sometimes a 67 on all the photos a mistake early for the beach
you should show it II don't actually mind them showing in
you know of course you warning of course right but you don't see it coming you
don't know I mean
in this day and age we should expect the cops to shoot because
remember shoot first ask questions later but at the same time I mean
it's just it could be jarring and why
you know kids could be what your people or something to add your
to regular you may still be watching it really really disturbed by
right now at the same time I don't know the reason I don't mind them showing
overall it they'd given a warning
is said I want people to see what our cops are doing
so if you're bothered by you should be bothered by
in you should take action to correct it and give you saw him put his hands up
right there on TV and they shot him anyway
well i get a sense so what's up what happens sometimes look up never brought
up
but remember the TV shows the say freeze you're under arrest
I can remember last time a cop said 30 under arrest
again it goes back decades so I it goes back to shoot first
ask questions later but the thing that was really telling for me and you know
it you guys can watch the entire
pursuit online KTLA dot com he has his back turned to the police officials he's
not running toward them
he's not reaching for a gun you can see his hands very very clearly
and his back is turned to them I feel like that should be warning number one
that you should not ship
now should also know that the police Chief Charlie Beck from Los Angeles said
that up preliminary information suggests that one officer fired a beanbag round
at Baird
before the other officers opened fire he also continues to say that before an
officer discharges the being bad the protocol
is too loudly state be mad ready bean bag ready
so that everybody knows that the next destination that big here
is not a gunshot so it's obviously an important context because once they hear
something fiery
than they're worried that he's the the guy they were chasing aspiring and
everybody opens fire
but not following protocol also gets people killed
and it's part of our overall a
unfortunately culture at this point that it happens
over and over again that you know RRC a producer irene was talking about how the
other day she saw
but this guy was on truly and he would listen the cops a news runaway
saw it on TV and they didn't shoot 'em issues kinda shocked by
craig we've gotten so used to this a slice couple will obviously you should
the guy
that if a cop doesn't shoot someone like wall look at that restraint
right per like proud them yeah more prone to them if they use excessive
force by pay czar or but are more like a
good job a crappy and looked is not the first time its happened
LAPD there was another recent shooting
very similar and the back a guy was a ***
in driving around and endangering people
and i got really angry doesn't mean you can execute
it doesn't mean you should arrest them absolutely bring the full weight loss on
a
but don't go firing first its it just happened that way to office
