We’re very honored to be giving the Brandeis medal to Justice Stevens
and we give the medal almost every year to an individual who represents the commitment to service
and civility that Justice Brandeis represented
He’s very much in keeping with the Brandeis traditions and commitment to many of the same things
He’s also interested in free speech and privacy, anti trust and a number of the same issues.
But most significantly is he traces his seat directly to Justice Brandeis.
One of the things that I really think is importantly and I value is having our whole community
in Louisville know about the connection of Justice Brandeis to our community and who he was
when one of the recent biographies was written about him
one of the reviewers said if you take the top 10 lawyers in the history of the United States
Justice Brandeis would be on that list
If you took the top 10 justices and judges, Justice Brandeis would be on that list.
No other person would be on both lists
He’s buried here, he was also born in Louisville, remained connected to Louisville
It was his wish to be buried at the law school and we honor his memory
his commitment to public service in many ways on many occasions
but the giving of the Brandeis medal is one of the most special occasions which we do that.
