Well, how about a hoops camp that improves skills and instills identity and culture?
It's our first film.
∂∂
>> This camp is a unique program.
It's a program of our nonprofit, the urban native education alliance.
The tribal boys had competitions with each other as a way of settling disputes, and they're very intense, very exciting, and a lot of fun.
What we've done is created something that is different than anything I've seen in terms of basketball camp.
Like we have native coaches.
We bring in elders and we bring in traditional elements as a way to reinforce a healthy identity.
>> I'm gonna say a prayer first.
It's my language, which is greetings those who have arrived recently.
∂∂
You're here because you were meant to come here.
And I love each one of you.
∂∂
>> So there's so many different tribes represented in Seattle.
When I'm working with the youth, I see that they're coming from a place of universalism, which is what tribal culture values.
>> It's my life.
My mom played it, my dad played it, all my brothers and family and sisters play it.
So I mean, it's my career right now.
>> Wow.
You guys do this.
And I don't want you looking down like this.
Once you start getting a good rhythm for it, you can start looking up.
>> These camps are very important to keep on the right track actually.
Because there's a lot of bad things going on.
And it's easy for people to fall into it.
>> What I've noticed is that our kids have become much more confident in themselves.
>> That's right.
That means you're going fast.
>> If you've never dropped it...
>> We hardly don't know anyone that's native.
So it's kind of fun to be around our kind of people.
So it's really nice to play basketball and kind of learn.
>> They know that, you know, there's other native kids here.
And so they feel comfortable to be around each other.
And I know that my son has made many friends from his basketball team.
>> It's a very welcoming place.
It's good exercise.
And basketball is a really fun thing for me.
>> They're learning life skills.
They're learning basketball, but they're learning how to be a good person, and to be a good tribal person, and a community person. And to me, all those things are what make up a healthy society.
