Selena Gomez Shines Bright at the Glittery Coach N.Y.F.W. Show
It is always a fun (“fun”) part of Fashion Week to see what sort of ordinary New York venues are transformed into glamorous locations for fashion to take place.
For the Coach S/S 2018 show, which took place on Tuesday afternoon, the interior of Basketball City—a large venue in Downtown Manhattan comprised of several indoor basketball courts—was covered in glitter.
The lights were turned off; the speakers were brought out; large sculptures of a car and a house and a mailbox were erected in the center of the room (all doused in glitter as well).
“I feel like I’m going to get glitter all over me,” one bystander bemoaned, to which her friend replied, in a drawl, “You will.”
Guest Emma Roberts was seen reaching down and swiping up a handful of the glitter from the floor before the show began.
If a beautiful 6’1” type in glistening capris had told you that rubbing the glitter on your face would make your skin glow, you would have fully believed them (and kneeled right down and rubbed your head in it).
Roberts, Charli XCX, James Franco, and others milled about before the show began, as attendees took selfies in front of the glitter-adorned car and crafted their Instagram Story Boomerangs.
The show was not ready to begin, however, until Selena Gomez arrived. Gomez is the new face of Coach, and she designs bags with the brand as well.
About 20 minutes past the show’s scheduled start, Gomez, dressed casually in jeans and a brown leather jacket, made her entrance amidst a large throng of handlers.
As if it was further necessary to make clear her somewhat recent fashion-icon standing, she was seated next to Anna Wintour. (Gomez appeared on the cover of Vogue earlier this year.)
The show itself, sponsored by Fiji Water, featured a host of of-the-moment models, including Kaia Gerber, Winnie Harlow, and Adwoa Aboah.
Gerber—the 16-year-old daughter of Cindy Crawford—is making her New York Fashion Week debut this week, and has been the outright breakout star, walking in Calvin Klein, Fenty x Puma, and Alexander *** shows, and garnering headlines and Instagram followers in the process.
When the models made their final walk around the glittered track, they took a pause to pose in front of the various structures.
Two models made brief eye contact—how long are we meant to solemnly pose in front of this glitter-bombed mailbox?—before moving back into single-file formation and exiting.
Before leaving, Gomez—who is currently filming a *** Allen movie in New York—exchanged pleasantries with Roberts and Spring Breakers co-star Franco, then eventually made her way back outside.
The glitter may not have literally followed her out of Basketball City, but it definitely followed her metaphorically—it’s wherever she goes—as a great flash of camera lights erupted as she walked out the doors.
