Hi, my name is Clint Schambach, personal trainer st Louis.
There is a big discussion right now over agave syrup, good or bad. Many people are taking
this now for their sweetener because it has a low glycemic index and this means it won’t
raise your blood sugar levels all that much.
Now, it is also packaged as as “organic” or “raw” which if you are walking through
the grocery store, this looks very appealing, especially if you are health conscious or
really trying to stay away from artificial sweeteners.
There are a few things wrong with this. For one, sure, agave syrup has a low glycemic
index, but it has a very high concentrated amount of fructose. Yes, fruit has a fructose
it in too, but not in the concentration amounts of agave. Depending on the brand you buy,
you may have as much as 55-90% concentration of fructose.
Even High Fructose Corn Syrup is lower than agave nectar in the fructose category. And
this is not good for your weight loss or general wellness. Agave is almost one and a half times
sweeter than actual sugar, but gets away with a low glycemic index because it is fructose
rather than glucose.
Like I was saying earlier, this doesn’t mean that’s a good thing. Even though it
doesn’t raise blood sugar levels, it still creates insulin resistance which in turn makes
you fat. This will also raise your triglyceride levels, promote more unhealthy fat storage
around your organs and of course, gives us more ugly belly fat. Like the beer belly and
muffin tops that everyone tries to get rid of.
So if you are serious about your weight loss, and overall general wellness, you would do
yourself a favor by not consuming this stuff and stay away.
