Greeting people, this is the Bellicose nation.
You know one of the small pleasures in life here at the bellicose nation is poking holes
in Myths, lies and just plain B.S. and thats why today as we move toward into the season
of charity I thought it might be fun topic to explore -when it comes to giving.... -Who
really gives, who really cares.
Despite Christopher Hitchens book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything ... the
facts just don't bear that out and this is one of the areas where he is just wrong, wrong,
wrong... but I should add Hitchens is one of my favorite public speakers I absolutely
love to listen to him as an orator. However on the subject of who gives of their
time and money there is no greater indicator than Faith in God.
Bottom line, Religious folks... just give more.
Now I know what many are thinking "Oh well come on those folks are simply giving to their
self serving churches .... you can't really call that giving". Sorry my friend, research
shows that faith in god and participation in that faith goes beyond the walls of their
congregation and these folks on a much greater basis... give money and involve themselves
in causes... which are totally secular... and it even goes beyond that.
OF course I will post some links below. But nearly anywhere you look for these numbers
you will find the same thing. With an occasion egghead trying to explain it away.
Research shows that while the hearts of Liberals are bleeding, their wallets ahh not so much,
at least not when compared to Conservatives and.... they typically have more trouble finding
even time to help out neighbors and their community and the biggest reason is.... our
Liberal friends tend to be less religious, as religion is the biggest indicator of who
cares.
In fact A few years back a book was written on this
subject called "who really cares" by Arthur brooks and in his research he discovered some
interesting findings. some surprised me... lets take a look at a few.
1. As a country and people, Americans are unbelievably charitable. we give 7 times more
dollars than the average German, 14 times more than the average Italian.
2. No other indicator will tell us how much you give and participate .....than...
if you attend a house of worship on a regular basis. Also... the research shows, Atheists...
while charitable with their great intellect and vast amounts of reason... just tend to
be kinda stingy ...when people need help.
3.On income level.... who gives the most? The working poor. As a percentage of their
income, we could all learn a lesson from them. The wealthy give very little according to
4. The Wealthy in this country in this country.... give ungodly amounts of money and many causes
would dry up without them, yet according to "ability," the working poor out-gives them.
Surprisingly the middle class is behind both of those groups.
5. if you take the view that "Gov't should be doing more to equalize income in the country",
chances are you will give a lot less than those who would not agree with that statement.
6. Religious Liberals are every bit as giving as Religious Conservatives, there are just
a lot fewer of them. Non-religious conservatives are one of the
cheapest political demographic.
7.People who give the most in charity also are the same people who give in the smallest
of ways as well. Listen, 7 in ten people who are charitable will also return money when
the wrong change is made at a cash register. For people who aren't charitable, only 3 in
10 will give the money back. Even the donating blood has a strong correlation
which follows this pattern of religion and giving, it's remarkable.
8.The data show that if two people — one religious and the other secular — are identical
in every other way, the secular person is 23 percentage points less likely to give than
the religious person and 26 points less likely to volunteer.
9. When we look at which parts of the country give the most to help the poor, house the
homeless and give up a little of what they have we see again, red states tend to be more
giving with Utah knocking the ball out of the park.... Mormons.
The most stingy state seems to be Main.
In conclusion, my friends on the Left often rejoice that the country is becoming less
religious they say good riddance to the "God factor" especially in public life....but one
can't help but wonder "who will fill their shoes" as the religious folks and their institutions
fade away, Don't take my word for it?...... go to your
local phone book... do it now and look up "social services" and see how many private
food pantries, homeless shelters and orphanages are
out there that aren't there from a religious organization and those few who aren't; call
them up and ask which groups are most involved in helping out....you'll have your answer.
seriously, how many orphanages do you know which are the fruit of Atheists? ..or or batter
woman's shelters for that matter... thats what I thought.
As fewer and fewer people sign up for Big brothers and big sisters and habitat for humanity,
will this be a better country? You tell me.
It could be .....those who so often clammer for a bigger Gov't in fact know what is coming
and they have a bit more foresight than we even knew.
Well I want to hear what you think, what you have found and what your projections are as
we transition into the "age of Aquarius" but PLease.... keep the language here civil.
