my apologies for not speaking german but by the time I leave here I'll maybe
speaking german
I have no idea how long this is going to take
This isn't really about me, it's about an attempt to silence
any movement to appose the trade in shark fins
The trade in shark fins is actually the third largest illegal trade
after guns and drugs
Last year Costa Rica
schipped off thirty
tons of shark fins to china
thirty tons
as hundreds or thousands of sharks
and that brings them a lot of money
and that money buys a lot of influence
and when i met with the
foreign minister for costa rica it was right funny
because he said
don't worry, in costa rica we we have no corruption. It's not a corrupt country
and then he said you'll be perfectly safe in our jails
because
we have two ex-presidents and they're safe
and they're in prison
so i said well let's go back to where you said there is no corruption
what are the two ex-presidents doing in prison?
It's a very corrupt country
i have volunteered to go to costa rica if they lift the extradition
i said all you have to do
is set a trial date
we'll bring our witnesses we'll bring our film
and will go to the trial
they don't want to do that
why?
they want me brought in handcuffs to be put in prison for up to a year until they
set that trial date
and for what
ten years ago
we were working with the rangers at cocos island three hundred miles
off
costa rica
in the year before in 2001 we had intercepted an ecuadorian long liner
that was catching hundreds of sharks
we seize the vessel
we turned it over to the rangers
and that became the first vessel to ever be confiscated by the costa rican
courts for illegal fishing
we said the president
in response to that
the rangers wanted us to work with them
so we were providing them with generators and boats
and we were the main source apply for equipment
so the next year we were to come back and signed an agreement with the uh...
costa rican government
and on our way down in april of 2002
we encountered
a costa rican long liner in the waters of guatemala
that was killing sharks and finning them and you saw that on the film
we filmed this
we told them to stop
they refused
so we got in touch with the guatemalan government
and the guatemalan government gave us permission to stop them
which we did
didn't think anything but
we carried on to costa rica
and the next day we were bolted by the police and the prosecutors and i was charged
with endangering the lives of all of the
fishermen
nobody was injured no property was damaged
so we went into court and we showed them our film
and our witnesses
and they dropped the charges
so we were free to go
two days later we were bolted again a second time
because they appointed a new prosecutor
and a new judge and charged me all over again
so we went into court
we showed them our film
we gave them our statements of witnesses
and he dropped the charges
and i was given permission to leave costa rica
that was ten years ago
never heard or thought about it 'til i arrived in frankfurt on may 13th
to find that i was arrested
because costa rica had an extradition warrant on me
and it had been dismissed by interpol as being politically motivated
by every other country in europe
so if i'd landed in france or spain or italy or england i would not have been
arrested
germany which does not have an extradition treaty with
costa rica decided to act on it
and no explanation has been given as to why they are doing that
the justice minister will say nothing
but i point out the people in germany are incredible
um...
but we haven't had very much support from the politicians
of course it's probably pretty much the case everywhere in the world
politicians don't do much anyway
uh... when you want something that we got to get people to do it and um...
unfortunately uh...
we get punished for doing that
but what has happened over the last ten years it has gotten so angry
we have a partnership in the galapagos islands with the rangers and the ecuadorian
police
and over the last ten years we have seized numerous costa rican vessels
and we have confiscated over two hundred thousand shark fins
uh... from these vessels we have cost of millions of dollars
that's what's behind all of this the fact that we are costing these people
millions of dollars
and they buy influence
and those politicians want me back in costa rica
in 2002 the rangers in cocos islands said that they had put
25 000 dollar hit on me that is the shark finners
and that anybody could get twenty five thousand dollars if they kill me
i don't know what it is now
for what better place to collect on that
than in a costa rican jail
that's where they want me they don't want a trial
they want an execution
and that's what this is all about
over the last 10 years in the galapagos what we've done is that we've set up an AIS
system
costed a million euros to do it
detects every single vessel that comes into the national park
we've supplied
patrol boat
aquino unit dogs that ship assessment of the sharpens
and radios for the police
and we've become a very important part
of protecting the galapagos
we want to do we've been wanting to do this of course i'll also
for the cd is incredible dimension
population vocals i was probably about ten percent of what it was twenty years
ago
and all over the world you're finding that this is the case
fish populations shark populations are collapsing
every year we are truly seventy five to one hundred million shot
and everybody said boy you know sharks are
dangerous creatures or monsters
the average number of people killed by sharks every year is five
the average number of people killed by a ostriches every year as a hundred
beall street is far more dangerous
than the sharp
and the number of people who were killed by
let me know golf courses every year
is far greater
the number of people kill black polka dots dropping on their heads and hawaii
is far greater
sometimes people get killed when they go into places where
things happen
but the sharp it is not
that monster that everybody thinks it is in back of the sharpest
is the architect of our oceans
four hundred and fifty million years ago pollution has been molded by the shark
buried issue c_n_b_c_'s behaviorist color
is camouflage
is because of the shower
is the apex predator and the ultimate architect of late in the sea
and if we remove it
because the repairable damage to our oceans foresees sheppard is above is not
just protecting whales and sharks and seals
it's about protecting
the bio-diversity of our oceans
the life support system the planet earth
emotions diet
two samples that we don't live on this planet
further debt ocean
and right now we are in the process of destroying life in our oceans from
pointed to the great whales
and you're not going to stop this
by taking pictures and hanging banners and sending letters
you're only going to stop the direct intervention
so i said it was a shepherd conservation society a thirty five years ago not to
protest i don't believe in from testing to be protest use submissive
please please please don't kill whales
maturity way
nobody's tilt wheel since we do want to show off
because we tell them we're not here to protest we're here to stalk you
with waiting for instance in the southern ocean last year of the japanese
got twenty six percent of the quote in here before that seventeen percent of
the quota
week also hundreds of millions of dollars over the last eight years
that's why they're so angry as a last october
being japanese government gave
thirty million dollars in the tsunami really bond to the winners to use
against each other
and what it would have wanted
p_r_ firms
lawyers as they try anything to try to join us in our lives of the united
states that they don't philosophies
they didn't looking everywhere in the world of on ways to do it
to prime minister of
of japan and with the president to costa rica in december
and that's a connection
right there to ban is really behind this
japanese pressure
now good news
last yesterday
uh...
on for peace in the land
we were being sent by the maltese company vision fish because in two
thousand and ten
re-released eight hundred we've been driven from their debts off of libya
and they said yes
yesterday we won
they have to pay legal costs of their biggest two hundred thousand pounds
his recorded by views we've been doing this
we'd never unisons successfully by anybody we've won every base
we had never
be convicted of a crime
we have never injured antibody
and we've never had anybody seriously injured
we're proud of that record we intend to keep it
you know if we go to those who are going well we will win this case because
everything
is on film
everywhere we go great britain cameras the cameras the most powerful weapon
that's ever been invented and we don't do anything without cameras that are all
there
that's the reason we start our own television joe if you want people to pay
attention did your own talent show
it is not television that's not real
know how that happens i went on to t_v_ networks and i said you know today's
show
on discovery right now is a bunch of then going into a very broad area of the
ocean
catching perhaps
eyecandy men and women from around the world going to a far more remote place a
bar romper sees
to save whales and we'll throw an iceberg and that he was going to be
better detaching perhaps
and celestial is now the number one show on one of the ladder
and uh... that has been very very
basis support
percy shepherd
now the reason i say shepard has been successful over thirty five years
because of one very important things
our crews
are volunteers
from all over the world
that's what makes seizure what is the imagination
and a passion
alcohol in two years we've had over four thousand people participate on our ships
and they come from everywhere
because if i could not
to do with these people
delivered nothing
the risks at least a
and it worked in the effort you put into it
you couldn't hire anybody to do this
and sold
that's what makes us he hasn't men and women from around the world who could
work on our ships
and the men and women from around the world who support us on shore
this is what makes us
what we are no longer
organization
because
i do feel that
to address impossible problems we need and possible solutions
and i believe you possible can become possible to the application of american
nation courage
reasonable out with
show all that is
nineteen seventy-two
the very high in india
that nelson mandela will be president of south africa in eighteen seventy was
unthinkable
unimaginable impossible
so i think we get is a religions as impossible as this might seem
and that's going to come from
the imagination passionate courage of
hundreds of thousands people around the world getting involved because people
make a difference
people sol
problems
governments
do not
when my daughter was up twelve years old she came home from school with a dome
and other teacher was upset with her because
proportionalism definition of government
and my daughter said all it's a bunch of men to get together digital animals and
other people
all
and i said well
that's pretty accurate definition as far as i could see
because when you look back through history every single so single social
problem is not the salt black pepper
slavery was ended by the or swimming dot the
suffragettes marines bridges
you know whose economies in the mandela
pieces of the people who make a difference not
presidents and prime ministers
and the reason that we have this pirate symbol
as our flag
well first of all people recalling aspirants susanna organ
door because pirates will be parts
uh... because eco-terrorist but that's wrong i don't work for bt
donna but
did you go back to the same
people back to the seventeenth century
with piracy was out of control in the caribbean
it wasn't the british and the spanish names that shot down the pirates
the reason for that
people really love him
merchants unwanted were making money
the lady was taking bribes for politicians are taking bribes
not much different than the way things are today
person was shut down by
apart
it was not hard to get my residence
because of the aids virus in the world
of the president's and the prime ministers of the congressman's and never
got all the politicians
or as mark twain once referred to the united states congress
as a parliament upwards
soul this is where twenty people who are guarding vested interests
our oceans are in trouble our oceans are dying and nobody is doing anything about
it on a government level
we have all the laws we have all the regulations we have the treaties
but there's no economic or political
willpower to help hold it
we just had this one
that a median rio de janeiro
twenty years after the last update from the rio de janeiro
where they all got together in stated by star hotels and the gourmet meals and
signed a letter about how we promised we're going to make a difference
we never make a difference is legal in the words sustainable back in nineteen
ninety two
u_s_ sustainable beans
business as usual under another name we'll just call it would be sustainable
inside
that's all it's about there is no sustainable fisheries in the world today
not want
still to be back
because of the city will be home
i call it the economics of extinction
there's going to be made by bribing species extent
loses a good example
want is worth
thousand euros
well that kind of price on his head is chances of survival are not very good
as the numbers on the ocean go down
known price for the ones in the warehouses golf
ends the solution other companies are putting them in the warehouses at a use
a black
and if there is no more blue fin tuna
and the only good thing to be left to reduce these warehouses in japan
i havent half-a-million europa is what we're talking about
billions of profits permissiveness vision
they want the fish to go extinct
because
division translates to higher prices
and this is happening all over the world they don't care
about the future
they just care about short term investment virtual term game
an order to use ravi wall future generations
souls would look like
you know hundred years
you know what i find really amazing some politicians said
all that's ok you know the united nations that are these trees
will not collapse until twenty forty eight
so let's uh... why didn't you just born last year and by the time you get years
older no more vision industry but i'm talking about your problem
star on
we're going to be done competition our seminar condor bluefin tuna
conducting
you know that's pretty much what we're saying to future generations
and that's where we've got to
we've got injured
because we represent the majority
all of those people who have yet to be forum
from here i mean
for representing them
and he does it take a stand
so i don't know i don't know what's going to happen that they send it back
to costa rica really doesn't matter
what will be movin
we certainly intend to use this
hole
case as a leader focus on the
big problem
between above our sharks and the destruction
and we're gonna do everything i do
for the attention on that particular
the articles regarding the costa rica
but i'll tell you one thing if i do know costa rica
and i did get filled in costa rica
will be responsible
annihilation
but then again they might not care
which would need a new
but uh...
seizures
uh... will continue without meeting
bob
archimedes
in the south pacific you're going to have our battles like last week
to protect sharks in the gene and tonga
in places like that that's where we're going right now
and in december mark missiles will head to
the southern ocean
four ships
to go after the japanese whaling fleet
and our campaign is yours cooperation zero tolerance because our objective is
not a single women to be killed i think refining a position where we have the
equipment and the people and the needs of the experience
to shut them down
one hundred-percent so that's our concert
and it was never called guardian program so we send people from september first
of march first of
tuje japan to be here too
you know to oppose the julie of the developments
will be able to continue to go up to the move into determines in the
mediterranean
uh... protecting seals and video
trying to stop the
destruction of the plant in the southern ocean also
there are so many things that we got involved in it
but were just walking
small organization
most any difference
hundreds of thousands of small organizations who can't depend upon the
big organizations to do anything
they're not going to anything
minority women too much money involved
once again a big deal become useless
so we need small organization
and uh... addressing different things a hundred thousand organizations
addressing a hundred thousand different things
protecting the
the theorizing tens unit you needed to protect you
the audio is protecting coral reefs
this is what i think try to get people to address
look at what you're passionate about
and get involved
because i have the the moral normal bending yourselves who
protecting the species for legal system
because in the hand policy
number of those contributors survived
rwanda
because of jane goodall people are aware of the problems of the chimpanzees
because of a kick out of the cost
arrangements were being protected in indonesia
because in the universe to use don't have a little bird interviews
is modest thing to do that for many different benford from becoming extinct
that's where we make a difference
on that level
and this is what we try to encourage further improve is his understanding of
each and every one of the human eye
at the power
difference
and we don't have to do it by getting on the ship is reasonably low
all we have to do just what we do best
if you're a writer if you're a builder if you're a lawyer if you're a teacher
it deleted for the future if you do it for the planet
diversity makes a move in
the streets of the legal system university the strength of a movement
mexicana diversity that were we're trying to encourage
but just a shot with the story
um...
uh... why i have
so dedicated to protecting whales
that goes back to nineteen seventy five and uh...
program tonight
organized the first greenpeace campaign to protect whales
is against the soviet within three to the pacific
when we come up with his idea we're reading a lot of got me at the time and
we thought that all we have to do with the result the cleanup
part from the white house and the russians wouldn't dare
giulio because it might be selling us
sounded good morning regarding
well when i found myself uh... small little riverboat
is under soviet power who invests all
those travelling at about twenty boston chasing eight megadoses for whales are
running away from trying to get away
so it's found herself in that position
an avenue to devote to block the harpoon
and every time i heard who try to get a shop block of the harpoon this work for
a vote
twenty five minutes
and let me captain came out and came up the catwalk
is free into the ear of the heart and really look at us peaceful out anyway
like this
and that's when i realized
gandhi's at work today
nationalist leaders as incredible explosion her from flew overhead and
slammed into the back side of one of the whales and protestant exploded
and she st
she's free meals like a woman and he has had a really describe it couldn
brutal struck that she's free enrolled on her side
afoul of the pool of blood everywhere and suddenly the largest will in the pot
rolls up on the water slacker water-resistant
disappear
any swim straight underneath of us
and he throws a lot of the water street at the harpoon or obsolete vessel to
protect his heart
but they're waiting for a bit putting another harpoon down faster whom
they pulled the trigger point-blank range hit in the head of the screen and
fell back into the water wichita anyway it was around us
blood everywhere and has his rolling around in agony of the service
font-size
they look at the age of
and now i sought to avoid ball's coming in
it's real fast
and he came up and out of the water at an angle
so the next moves to fall down on a certain projects
and as i said rose above the water and i saw that i'd come out of the water
society like this one i saw there
is what changed
because i saw
understanding
weight
how never forget my own reflection in the eye that whale that's how close it
was
and as you know also back
and as for his life back into the sea
and i thought i disappeared beneath the surface
anne dot
could kill us and he chose not to do so and he had every right to do so
but he chose not to do so
i while i have
but i saw something else and i
an offer to sell
for us
how could we do something
soldiers a source
hopefully take life with us all the people
and for what
the russians were team the whales
they were making
there is any oil for
resistant machinery
and one of the most valuable
the use of the reason
storms that he will or
was a construction
intercontinental ballistic missiles
i said here we are
destroying this incredibly beautiful
socially complex beautiful creation
for the purpose of making a weapon that would in essence termination of human
beings
and that's when it hit the we argues saying
ecologically husain to support that
and saw from that moment on
i said to myself
we do what we do it
can offer people
our clients are waves our clients are shocked stem seals and sea turtles
dot so we represent
so people say oh i disagree with your tactics
finally away other disagrees with our tactics
you know we don't represent people who represent whales
but we do have responsible
we've never injured anybody
we never killed anybody
and in nineteen eighty five
i had a tibetan buddhist monk come to my ship in seattle
and he he he has little
statute
and he said i don't have to get this together you put it up on your top ***
for protection and everything
reassure okay but uh... when somebody says i just fantastic
give give it to them
so i just wondered if it was not comes along until seven hundred or not that's
why not so we put it up
but if there's anything else
until nineteen ninety four years later
i had a great opportunity to meet with his people
the dialogue
anti-trust issues
and i showed it to the dalai lama supporters of this
the loan guarantees is
possessive
this is a whole
how did we give up
missiles at
he says is the symbol of really compassionate aspect of blues
insulated cindy
cases you don't want to hurt you if it's a lie
insulation in ceiling demands
scared i had a lot of them until they do
so we understood what we're doing what i call an aggressive non-binding
we'll work it although we destroy your group
benjamin netanyahu non violently destroy our only destroyer right when he does
for a really good
beers eighteen months
reactive saving lives is non-binding
and as martin luther king once said you cannot commit an act of violence instant
on the thing
but if you commit an act up so-called destruction i guess it doesn't do what
it meant to kill somebody
dash is an act of non-violence
and cessation for is ontario
non-violent
organization
yet you accept that
but in a society where
property is more important than life
people accuse us of the
and that's what we get all sorts of aids
they handed
policy-wise
two years ago i was invited actually to speak to the f_b_i_ quantico united
states
by the recipient of a lecture the f_b_i_
then the question for you can get the audience at
william seizures walking pretty damn fine line when it comes to the lol
as of yet but who cares how fun it is as long as you don't also line
selected argued that that was a
well guess what your training people to
to the throat hurts
and people to recruit me or one of the computer
first of all i can be responsible for what people do not remove the man who
was the head
yellow
you train them
you're responsible
as old as remains for you to mitigate the baby harley all's well and also i
live
usually does
you're responsible
so puget
got a standard that we have to deal with all the time that that is a little mode
movement the effort is is it on the planet
has been
the environmental conservation
three hundred and sixty
environmentalists have been murdered
and yet that's not
most people aren't aware of it
but not one single person that we have opposed
not want
so
they're always wanted to hear
but it's all just
public relations
the most violent people on this planet are the people who are destroying the
planet
not the people
force a plan
so thank you very much for the things we thank you very much for your support
and uh...
espiritu is is is it
we have the support of diverse around the world saw all of your drivers are
very appreciative of that
divers and surfers especially because these are people who really understand
our oceans
and uh... i think that anybody who's actually going down
and small martial arts
and almost a full understanding
that these
are creatures with intelligent
bizarre creatures that feel these are creatures that are aware of their
silverware
k
that's what it certainly doesn't but the reason one of one of the reasons for
that
is because forty percent
beholden
fish taken out of your feeling is that it is
injectors
and acts
forty percent
now what that means that the world's pigs are eating more
fictional worlds sharks put together
domestically spencer anymore
than all the world's
uh... skills put together
and chickens in denmark alone
are eating more fish than all the world's albatross incompetence put
together so people don't really put that together or understanding
that these people out of the ocean
he's the forty percent is being dead animals which in turn right that the
people
annotate seventy percent of the ocean
to raise one sam
through the evening
his alive
negativity questions from
capable
shaadi mechanics listened in on how many i don't think the business has been in
and it's not possible to see the buildings undersized as you can resort
in the audience collection
fanaticism visits
at the same time
actually coming to germany it was on my way to finance
but i happen to be in denver
and a big mistake you getting on the piles up
blissfully unaware
so i had a flew to paris i'd be okay
the best thing to do is just a second day of you heard our message to the
justice minister of
yes keep bugging her now she's gotta go
apparently she's gotten a hundred and forty-eight thousand letters so far
we've also been supported by the brazilian set it up if you know uh...
criticizing during an costa rica
the french senate uh... five nations of the revolving out of the united states
did native indians
fav
and also the former environment minister of australia and the four environment
minister of
costa rica
who is supporting us
so where do you happen to have a lot of quite a bit of uh... support than the
former prime minister of british columbia in canada
so it's a remarkable memo armed ministers
articles they've done a lot of celebrity support from pamela anderson and uh...
tommy lee and uh... there's prosody martin sheen hidden michelle rodriguez
has been offered her a very good and putting up tough
videos and criticizing anybody
actually try to get on our coverage
enters prosody here because i figure we got a call in jeans bones you know
but uh... see if they can do it but uh...
but there's something here there's something there is an agenda to hear
that
nobody's telling us about
because you do not go to all of this trial an effort and expense
to arrest somebody ten years later
for something where nothing is damaged and nobody was hurt
just on the complaint a couple of fishermen who were already convicted of
the posters
and everything is on track
it doesn't make anne
logical sense
so there's something else that is the
hyper state a good step and leave on european mostly
the japanese
he s with a passion
because last september the prime minister japan said
we will not
surrender to seize shipments
they're treating us like a rendition of their
which is bazaar really a very humiliating for the japanese
yes and i love the jury returning to our journey as long as i report once a day
to the police station frank personally but my autograph incidentally inside
derek bradley actually very supportive
very photogenic
in fact the judge apologize for oblique threatened apologizing please apologize
everybody went to get up to whoever these people are in power i don't know
what the resistance but uh...
desilets mister perot
privately
now
csc
loser justice has the power to release me right now
because costa rica and germany had no extradition treaty
and interpol dismissal warrant so she has a power to do it
argument is that what was the illegal and you put into motion to the costa
rican court on this
because
how do you put on extradition warrant without the person to ever be notified
that they were wanted it work
who i was never given the opportunity to come to court
so that makes the warranty legal but the judges in costa rica simply refuse to
acknowledge
yes or no they will say anything there just isn't not acknowledging promotions
olly oxen
this season
as you get a plan for the second
no accent i think about the most of my time here so
working on
michael will wars of america's antarctic campaigns
and uh...
two other projects and
rosetta stone german program arrives i think the moral salt begin to learn
german soulful
yes uh... we you're getting out for
so will be back movie going back to the southern ocean
four ships
this year
uh... an abortionist
to be called the samsung because he donated money for
uh... sent signed by the way it's a co-producer of the citizens
so it might have a big part simpson about that
analog circuitry uh... the most important part of that will be bringing
about a hundred and twenty
volunteers
uh... down to the southern ocean
which by the way a career as a opportunity it's the most beautiful
place on her
there's nothing like this like going to another planet
and everything about it says you're sitting there and you know that there's
not another human being for a thousand miles
auto theft that way
but
the
onto the
policy is that it had always
the
off
about lawyers here
passed by the lawyers girlfriends flex panna
decisions later she used
there's a vegan cafe record
no i i i i i haven't heard of it
whereas if you look
telesales labor dispute
and
apparently more questions here
and he had
he was not how do we can get on the set
culture
can certainly support
chicago t_v_ *** rutan occasion put it in and then uh...
uh... peter and will skip losure either see appeared recently
we we we always turn everybody over to the hammer to decide whether
and get out there
but i don't know the chances of getting out sometime meeting up next campaign
but at some time
for very good because we're trying to make room for is the people
as possible
and as long as you're eighteen haha
there's always restriction i think our oldest remember was eighty six
albert ho hi ho
are
four o'clock p dot had no idea as to the rest of us and part is that the other
part of the side is we can vote sitting on the issue
uh... costa rica is not very happy because now everybody is talking about
sharpening in costa rica and this country which is supposed to have a
reputation
grievance of democratic isn't coming off their agree how very democratic
people are starting to realize what we known for
three years ago costa rica
the cartoonist brochures are basically all i
you know there's a lot of corruption there's a lot of environment
not degradation going on
both in the course of costa rica and in the oceans off of costa rica
uh... i have seen that state initiatives
alone
biodiversity of costa rica and it is
it's one of the worst in fact i would say it was rejected as the worst latin
american country for killing sharks
worse in colombia
