[tuneful steel drums and chimes]
Will: It's nice to meet you both.
Blue: Likewise.
Will: Josh, you are --
13.
What grade?
Blue: Ninth.
Will: You're ahead.
Blue: Always has been.
Will: How do you like that?
Josh: I don't know.
I, uh,
I guess I'm used to it.
I don't really have anything else to compare it to.
Blue: He says that a lot.
"I don't really have anything else to compare it to."
He said that the other day.
Josh: I did?
Blue: I asked him if he thought I was a good mom,
and he said "I have nothing else to compare it to."
'Cause I'm the only mom that he's ever had.
Josh: No you didn't ask if you were a good mom.
You asked what I thought of you as a mom.
Blue: He's very precise.
Will: OK.
Let me just get more of the basic stuff down.
Any siblings?
Blue: Nope.
Just the two of us.
Will: And Josh's dad?
Blue: He's not in the picture.
I got pregnant when I was 16.
So, the father's not around.
Will: Never has been?
Blue: Nope.
Will: And,
any other family?
Blue: My mom.
Josh is really close to her.
Right Josh?
Josh: [quietly] Yeah.
Blue: And my sister, Laura.
Younger.
She lives in Florida.
She's a bit...
Will: Go ahead.
Blue: Well, no, I just don't see her that much.
Will: And what do you do for work, Francine?
Blue: I work in an accounting firm.
And I prefer Blue.
I go by Blue.
I don't like "Francine."
Will: OK.
So --
[sighs]
Why are you here today?
Blue: Josh has had some run-ins with other boys at school.
Will: Run-ins?
Blue: Josh told this boy,
the boy's adopted.
Josh said that he was adopted because--
no, that he had been given up for adoption because he comes from bad ***.
The other boy tried to beat Josh up.
And this boy is physically practically a man.
And he was not asked to go to therapy.
I mean, don't you think that he should have to go to therapy too?
Will: Why'd you say that to him, Josh?
Did he provoke you in any way?
Josh: Yeah.
Will: What did he do?
Or say?
Josh: Nothing alright? It's.
It's his whole demeanor.
"I'm hot ***.
I'm better than you."
Will: Does this boy,
what's his name?
Blue: Harry.
Will: Harry.
How does Harry convey that attitude?
I mean, what is it --?
Josh: It's subtle.
Everyone thinks he's cool.
You know, 'umble.
Big 'umble jock.
Star.
But it's ***.
Yeah. He's vain.
Really, really thinks highly of himself.
And the worst part is he's got everyone fooled into thinking so too.
He's a prick.
And a crybaby.
Will: Why do you think he hasn't been able to fool you?
Josh: [deep breath]
So how does this work?
The therapy?
At one point do you just call the school and tell them I'm OK?
Will: I think it's more about how you feel, than the school.
Have either of you been in therapy before?
Blue: I have.
When I was younger.
I don't really remember much of it though.
Will: What we do here is, we talk.
About anything you want.
Any topic.
And through you talking,
and me talking to you,
and asking you questions.
And getting to know you.
Together,
we can start to see areas.
Things about your life.
Or school.
Or anything.
Things you might be having difficulty with.
Complicated feelings.
Stuff you've never said before, for example.
To anyone.
Might be trapped inside you.
Bothering you.
Making you --
angry.
Depressed.
Or scared.
Without you even knowing what's happening.
Basically, it's about finding out what's bothering you.
Josh: And what if nothing's bothering me?
Will: Well then, this should be easy enough.
Josh: Is it me, or me and my mom?
Will: Well, we should talk about that.
What do you think?
Josh: Just me.
There's no reason for you to go through this too.
I brought this on myself.
And it's probably cheaper with just one person.
Blue: [scoffs] We can afford it.
Josh: No we can't.
Blue: No. Yes.
We,
I have some money saved.
Josh: You do?
Blue: Yes.
Some.
Josh: How much?
Blue: None of your beeswax.
Josh: What's it for then?
Blue: Emergencies.
Josh: Mom, this isn't an emergency.
Blue: No. No it's not.
But it's unexpected.
So it's kind of an emergency.
Josh: [scoffs] Money put away.
Another one of your secrets.
Will: The hourly rate is the same,
whether it's the two of you or just Josh.
I would only charge extra if you came separately.
Blue: No. It's OK.
Josh: By myself.
Will: Blue.
Why don't you let Josh and I talk for a little while,
and then you and I can speak at the end of the session?
Blue: OK.
I'll just be out there.
Josh: And I will just be right in here.
Knock if you need me.
[footsteps]
Blue: He is kind of a smart-***.
