Primarily, we are an academic program.
Really, what we're trying to do is
to help students learn the standards
that they haven't quite mastered
during the school day.
So we do that in the morning
with our latchkey, and our homework club.
The Salvation Army provides
morning latchkey services for parents
who have to go to work early in the morning.
That’s how you pronounce it.
We're thrilled to work with this school
to provide this program.
We know that it makes a difference
in this community.
It makes a difference to families
who are struggling to make ends meet,
who need that resource.
Latchkey is open earlier than most daycares.
So I can drop them off, they're already at school,
I don't have to worry about transportation.
They also provide homework help
if the night before was hectic,
or, you know, not as planned.
- Hi Miss King. - Hi, guys.
- Hi Miss King. - Hi Quentin.
At three o'clock, the bell rings,
They have a snack, and then in the afternoon
we have what we call our dolphin club.
Dolphin club is our program
for students that are not quite at grade level,
approaching, and need some extra help.
We're gonna do a compare and contrast, right?
You look at one thing,
and you compare it to another.
We have UNRs cooperative extension.
UNR is the University of Nevada,
and they come in once a week
to provide science based activities to our kids.
Where does Co2 get trapped, in the...
Atmosphere!
What do you think these baggies
are gonna represent?
The atmosphere.
I love having Jim Barcellos come in.
He has a whole different dynamic to him.
Because he's not a teacher,
he doesn't see these kids all day,
so when he comes in they're excited,
they want to see him,
they want him to be in their classroom.
If you were a fish which planet
would you want to live on?
The kids get to do something that they
really wouldn't have done during the school day,
so that's a great partnership.
Mine is the best planet ever.
We already were a partner
with the Boys and Girls Club,
and we thought, "Well, wouldn't it be great
if we had an academic program here,
and then bused the kids over there."
Because we do academics well,
and they do recreation well.
I got it!
I really feel that the fit with the school district
to do this program was a real natural fit
for the Boys and Girls Club.
We're helping the parents,
and we're helping the kids,
and we're working with the school district.
I think what I've learned is
we don't have to be everything to everybody.
We have to partner with people
that can help us provide everything we need.
How was your day at school?
For us, it's a thrilling time
to see the progress that's being made,
to know that this program is bridging
with other programs, and that overall
the kids are being given an opportunity
to grow, to learn, to be challenged
sometimes beyond what they're normally
accustomed to, and to dream,
big dreams.
Cool.
