Welcome to this edition of the Multimedia Impact Weather Briefing for Central Alabama.
This briefing will focus on the potential of snowfall late tonight into Wednesday morning.
The system that will be impacting the area late Tonight/Wednesday morning is known as
an "Alberta Clipper" These systems move very quickly and are fairly
dynamic as they move through. The timing of this clipper has been a big question over
the past few days, so confidence has been high enough to include
snow in the forecast, but mainly as a mixture with rain. Models this morning have been trending
closer, colder, and more in line for some accumulating snowfall across Central Alabama.
With such a low accumulation total for a winter weather advisory (1/4 to 2"), there is enough
confidence to include in the hwo this morning. The next two slides will break down this slide
for better details.
Here is the approximate start times for the rain to switch to snow. The area highlighted
in white will see the best chances for accumulation.
Here is the approximate snowfall accumulation potential on the ground. Remember snowfall
accumulation will always be higher vehicles as metal will cool quicker than the ground.
That is why we measure snow on the ground versus vehicles. Keep this mind though if
the temperatures are a touch cooler than forecast, there could be some locally higher totals,
especially in the northeast.
In Summary, this particular storm system called an "Alberta Clipper" will have limited moisture.
This leads to lighter precipitation amounts. Temperatures will start off near freezing
Wednesday morning but will warm into the upper 30s north and central with 40s in the south.
Therefore, any snow that accumulates will be
rather short-lived.
