Reach Mississippi, the state's personnel development grant works with schools and districts across
the state to assist in the implementation of school wide positive behavior support.
The purpose of this video is to outline the critical elements of PBS and provide examples
from schools in MS Implementing PBS with fidelity. Although each school will review and create
systems of each critical element of PBS. PBS is processes that will reflect the culture
and climate of each individual school. school-wide positive behavior support is away for schools
to comprehensively plan for how they are going to teach their expectations around behavior.
It makes sure that everybody at the school. The teachers and the students and the administrators
are all on the same page about what their school looks like, how their school operates
and how they are going to make sure that everyone is always aware and able to meet those expectations.
We go around the state helping districts identify how they want this to work in their schools
because school-wide PBS is not a program. It's a decision-making process that's very
individualize at each school so that the leadership team that includes not only the administrators
and the teachers but also the parents come together and they decide what is right for
our school, what does our school need and how we are going to make sure that we provide
our students with the best opportunity can be make sure they not only know what to do
but recognize what they do things that they suppose to do. A lot of times when people
think about PBS; they think about the awards' system while that it is one part of it. It’s
a really very minor part. When you look at school-wide systems you are really looking
at making sure that that you have looked across environments who looked across everything
and you have a comprehensive system that's just not based on your history, it's based
on your real needs and real data at your school at that point of time. So this DVD is designed
to give you information about all of the clinical elements or all of the things you need to
think about when you are setting up your school-wide system and it will guide you through and give
you good examples of how schools in MS are succeeding with positive behavior support.
We think that you should hear from the people out there doing this everyday in their schools.
We think they have some good ideas and some good stories for you as you begin your implementation
of school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports. I think the first thing you
can say will be that our children are excited about behavior which is quite the opposite
of what when you think about it because usually children when you think about behavior that
really I guess a negative vibe from them about it but our kids is excited because the fact
they get to earn cougar bucks and spend those whenever they want to. PBS at Three Rivers
Elementary is basically a philosophy it's what I want to call it. It's just a whole
change in the climate and the culture that we've created at Three Rivers Elementary a
more positive learning environment. PBS's impact district a positive way we have seen
when things happen from teacher morale, increasing in a lot better to obviously student discipline
referrals decreasing. I think about 50% at the Middle school and also here at the Elementary
school which is which is huge; it's almost like buying back instructional time and you
get those kids back in the classroom or an office; whenever they are in a classroom and
not in the office, it's huge for us and all. You know it's also been a a way to pull teachers
together and honestly share and share with each other with different things they do in
a classroom how they do with this one, how they do in a positive ways instead of negative
ways so it's back to our district in a huge way. The challenge we have to educated kids
is not just reading, writing, math, history and it's now days a lot different the challenge
that we have to not only to educated kids; we also teach them morals, values and behavior
expectations. That has increased a lot in the last 20, 25 years. We don't have time
not to do that because it will turn around and bites us pretty badly. you know this classroom
situation classroom times those students in the classroom does do a lot with that so making
time to do it is not a real option for us right now as we see. PBS is a systems approach
to Social Competence and Academic Achievement. Four PBS elements are #1: outcomes: Academic
and behavior targets are endorsed and emphasized by students, families and educators. #2: practices
are interventions and strategies that are evidence based; how will you reach the goals?
#3: data; information that is used to identify status need for change can effects interventions;
what data you will used to support your success or barriers? And #4: systems; supports that
are needed to enable the accurate and durable implementation of practices of PBS. What durable
systems can be implemented that will sustain this over a long hall? PBS levels of support;
first, school-wide procedures and process intended for all students, staff and specific
settings at across campus. Second; Target group, processes and procedures design to
address behavior issues of groups of students with similar behavior needs or behaviors that
occur for the same reasons. For example; attention seeking and escape. And third; individual
student, processes and procedures will reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior
coupled with team-based strategies to address challenging behaviors of individual students.
This video will focus on the implementation of school-wide PBS. PBS is a system change
process. Schools and Districts must either create or adjust their current systems to
establish and ensure the critical elements of PBS that are in place and being implemented
in schools with fidelity. Each of these critical elements must be in place before implementing
school-wide PBS. Schools create three to five positive stated school-wide expectations.
These expectations are general enough to be applicable in multiple settings but specific
enough to be assistance in generating rules for targeted settings. School faculty and
staff are responsible for teaching and reinforcing school-wide expectations. Students and faculties
should be able to state the school wide expectations. I really believe; I know the kids may think
it's just a cliché but I really do believe our expectations they are believe that effort,
attitudes, and respect will equal success; we are the bearers that's ours are and it’s
true. Your success is depending on how much you are willing to work, what kind of attitude
you display and the way you respect yourself and the ones around you. And I do believe
it! And I think that belief in that has caught fire at our school. I do believe it has infiltrated
our faculty that we had troubled; you know we wanted to know would they buy-into this.
And because we were a High School; are they going to get it or are they going to think
this is juvenile? Is that going to be something they are going to understand? And they have
really taken to it and accepted it very well. We teach Science. We teach Math. And we access
those key subjects. We in Newton County schools have found that the need is to teach behavior,
Positive behavior. Teach the expectations! The Children will rise to the occasion. Our
school-wide expectations are to be ready, respectful and responsible. As I grow up or
go to college; My teachers expect me to be very ready, respectful, responsible. I don't
want to be tardy and get some demerits. I’ve got to respect her so she will respect me.
I am responsible so I can keep up with all of my stuff and have it in on time. The school
expectations are act responsibly and come prepare, have respect and show self-control.
School expectations say come respectful and ready to learn. School expectations are act
responsible, come to prepare, have respect and show self-control. Our mission statement
is as Cougars, we respect others and ourselves, be responsible for our actions, and have self-control
and everything will be good. We can use those expectations life like as helping others to
desire and I think it's a real good thing about it like count or whatever because we'll
have lots of students that are approve that they do. The School expectations are to be
respectful, be responsible, be prepare, be positive, be safe! School wide expectations
are little cougars as safe, kind, respectful, ready to learn. Our school-wide expectations
are act responsibly, come prepared, have respect and show self-control! Identify why and How
to teach rules and expectations. Develop activities for teaching school-wide expectations and
rules. Identify how to embed expectations in the curriculum. Explore creative ways to
teach behavior. We actually modeled to younger classes, the teacher actually took them out
of the halls, and they walk quietly single file out to the buses, they actually loaded
the buses and sat on the buses as if the buses were loading to go home at the end of the
day and they will pretend they crank the bus and they said ok; now, you can talk quietly
with your neighbors. All right; it's changed the bus referrals tremendously you can see
the numbers dropped dramatically from the 1st # we've started. Responsibility is something
that teachers taught us, we used it in a classroom and even on the bus. The Best responsibility
and positive support are all good things are but don’t forget one more: Go Self-Control!
Go Self-control! PBS. Now you've heard all about our school's real success; down in Newton
County, we call it PBS. Look at our rolls as we’re finally there, as we model our
example for schools everywhere. Word! As Cougars, we respect others and ourselves; we’re responsible
for our actions, and have self-control in everything we do. We show positive behaviors
everyday every way; positive behaviors! We're respectful and we’re kind; that means we
always mind. We’re always taking turns and always ready to learn. ……. Positive Behaviors;
everyday! Everyway; Positive Behaviors!
