So Del, I heard that you're quite a traveler.
That you traveled to many countries.
Well, a few. About 50, I guess.
50! That is probably more than anybody I know.
50! That is probably more than anybody I know.
You know... are most of those countries in Asia or...?
Uh... well, Asia; Latin America ; Europe...
Really, Wow! Where... where was the last place that you
traveled to?
The last place I traveled to was actually in Japan. To Kyoto.
Kyoto.
This year...
This year...
Yeah.
Oh, I love Kyoto.
But the last place abroad um... Was...
Well, of course,the United States...
where I go back to visit my family.
Is United States... do you consider that a trip or just going
home?
Well, I kind of consider it a trip because I don't go very often any
more.
Ah...
I go every couple of years.
Really.
Yeah, so it's turned out to be kind of a special event for me...
now when I go back.
You're a real international man I think.
So you're an international person, I guess.
I guess so because I'm actually an American citizen
and now I live in Japan.
Hmm... I see.
Maybe that makes me international.
Well, what is the country that you have the best memories of?
Oh there are too many to list.
Uh... how about one or two?
I love England, you know.
England?
Yeah, not only England, but,all of the UK that I've been to
which has not been much yet.
I've never been to Wales or Ireland; I'd love to go there.
What's so special about England?
Oh yeah well, you know, I think that a lot of Americans have a
kind of sentimental...
um... well, for example, my mother was from there.
Uh huh...
Yeah.
So I feel like I have some roots there.
Uh... I see... huh...
and you speak English.
And I speak English.
And... uh... you know... and I studied uh...English literature
when I was a student
so it's nice to go back there and sort of, you know,
see the places where all that stuff was written, and...
Oh, I see... yeah.
that kind of thing.
I think Asia is such a fascinating a fea.
Yeah, I agree.
Because... um...
in a... in a rather small area there are so many different uh'...
cultures.
So you... it's..you can experience a lot of different kinds
of life
without actually having to... U m...
move around a great deal.
I mean, long flights and that sort of thing.
I... I agree, and I think it's different enough...
to make it really interesting but not so different that it becomes
difficult.
That's right. I agree.
That's right. I agree.
If you could pick one country to, recommend the students in Asia
which country would you recommend?
Well uh... if it's the first trip.
Yes.
Maybe Singapore
Ah ha.
because, well, there would be no language problem
because everyone in Singapore speaks English.
Uh huh...
And so...uhm... for our students who speak English as well...
maybe for a first trip that would be good kind of introduction to
Asia.
I see.
Is... is... and what country do you like most of Asia?
Oh...that's... I don't think I could answer that.
Yeah... I loved Thailand enjoyed Malaysia, Indonesia'....
India is so vast that um...
actually, I've only visited two cities there :
Delhi and Bombay.
Ah...
You could spend a lifetime in India.
OK I'm going to ask you some really quick questions
and I want just a quick, simple answer. OK, ready?
No, no... ready? Uh... most beautiful scenery?
Oh my... uh... beautiful scenery... maybe Nepal.
Nepal... most interesting food?
Thailand.
Friendliest people
Oh... maybe Japan
OK... uh... best deal for travel? I mean cheap and...
Well, of course, that's change... that changes all the time, doesn't
it?
Uh huh...
uh.. maybe...I would say Malaysia.
Malaysia...Huh... I never thought of that
At least the time I was there, it was like that.
Favorite airline?
Uh... Singapore..
Singapore, um... and most difficult place to travel.
Hmm.... of the countries I've been to?
Yes
Uh well, um... for traveling alone. Maybe Tibet.
Tibet!
Yeah.
I forgot you went to Tibet. Not many people have.
Well, it was an interesting experience.
But..um...it was a little difficult in some ways.
I heard it's difficult to breathe.
That's right. Because the altitude is so high.
Thank you very much Del. It's been very informative.
Thank you, Wayne.
