A disc is like a shock absorber that provides
us the ability you know to walk ability to have movements
ability to have flexibility and they work like a
shock absorber like work in a car a lot of times you know
this type of disc that this will well covered by
a membrane the membrane with rupture and some of the disc
will come out since the nerves come close to the disc
it will compress the nerve and when the nevers compress
patients will have pain will have weakness
numbness and tingling sensation when this type of condition continues to
progress over a period of time and
do not respond to medical treatment then what we do at a time of
operation we shave the portion of the disc that's become herniated
the portion of the disc that has ruptured and leave the rest to the disk alone
and by doing this we release the pressure on the nerve
and the nerve can go through the healing process a spinal fusion is also
available
especially in those cases when the disc is not that good anymore
besides the disc has ruptured in those cases you need to replace you know
the disc
in this case what we do is we place an implant
and the implant looks like a ring but in place
instead of the disc and then that will allow the bone
to fuse and allow to provide the stability to the level
and that also will prevent the irritation of the nerve that comes from the
motion
between the bodies. When I went to medical school
we were taught that rest is the best thing after spinal surgery
but science has proved that, that is not the case it is just the opposite
the more activity you improve circulation and all the nutrients can
reach the area much better if you're active
therefore whenever you have a minimally invasive approach patients have the ability to
stay active
after the operation and they can walk they can do activities that helps the
recovery
patients can start walking the day of the operation and they gradually
just a walking more and more over the a
subsequent days and up from from my own experience patients usually require
to have strong pain medication for one to two weeks and another two weeks they start
tapering the medications once the pain from the operation
starts to decrease what brought me to this institution was the
innovation of the technology they have available to physicians we know that
whenever you use a better technology
in a performance surgery the outcomes are better
there is also a reduction of a risk of infection
and patients in general have less pain and they can recover
much quicker to return to their activities so far
they did even as well as to return to work
