Bent'S Fort was built as a private commercial trading post.
Goods from around the globe arrived at the fort and were traded for furs - mostly beaver and buffalo.
The fort's trade room served as a store for fort employees, Plains Tribes and trappers.
Trapper speaks, "Mr. Holt". Trader speaks, "Mr. Kisthart". Good to see you. Good to see you."
Trapper - "We've come ready to trade - not much though - about 40 pounds of beaver.
This is representative of what we've brought in here - all good quality."
Trader - "Where did you manage to find some?" Trapper - "Oh geeze, we rode hard, some tributaries of the Colorado.
Trader - "Very good. I know the central mountains here are pretty well trapped out."
Trapper - "Yeah, I'm going to get into another line of work I think.
We have about 4 or 5 good robes - Smiling Elk Woman tanned them.
Trader - "Nice robes". Trapper - "What's the price of beaver these days?"
Trader - "About $4.00 a pound".
Trapper - "$4.00! We better get what we need."
Trapper - "First, I need a keg of powder and a small keg of powder, I need lead too."
"about 20 pounds. What's the price of powder these days?" Trader - "$2.00 a pound."
Trappe - "Ee dogs and lead?" Trader - Leads going for $1.00 a pound. Fine St. Louis bar lead and you said a bag of shot?"
Trapper "Just 1 bag of shot." Trader - "That will run you another dollar". Trapper - " Oh, she wants a kettle".
Trapper - "Good, ok, Trader - "You are at $75.00." Trapper - "$75 Huh. We'll need coffee, salt maybe 5 pounds of each."
Trapper - "How about a hank of beads for Smiling Elk Woman here?"
Trapper - "Put down about half of whats left to help pay off my debt from last year and keep the rest in credits."
Trapper - "Do a little celebrating while we're here."
Trapper uses Cheyenne sign language, "You go. Make camp. I stay here and talk with Little White Man. "
Trapper - "We'll be back to pick this stuff up." Trader - "Very good. We'll have it here.
Trapper - "Good to see you." Trader - "Glad to have you back."
