the Rolling Stone cover that features the Sun I've brother
%uh who survives after the Boston bombing I
and a lot of people are taking issue with this cover because
love the way it looks it seems to kinda
make him like seem like a rockstar make him seem like
he's being idolized by people glorified by people
and understandably if you are one of the victims the Boston bombing if you see
that Rolling Stone cover:
you're under the assumption that they're making out to be a good guy
of course they're not actually doing that in the article
the article profiles him the interview family members and friends that were
familiar with him
and it's not like a positive article about him but just by looking at the
cover it seems like
they are making him out to be some sort of Rockstar so
I get to thought so when I saw the cover one I don't even like the title
like the bomber right it almost makes a sound cool I can somewhere like
armory hit aim I think it's weird but as we were doing that story as as it was
happening
I never want to calm the Boston bomber because it almost sounded like a
baseball player like it character et cetera
I don't glorify these guys at all in fact
on the show we have a policy of not mentioning the name of the Newtown
shooter that's when we saw that policy
for the shoot is a center because you see you see in the writings oftentimes
they say
all you know I saw much attention to other guys got
and I wanna go out with a *** and I want to show people what I can do
and it really have covers like this and you will we don't show streakers
at baseball games like drawing on your meditation
are always so is giving this guy tension by putting the
what's got to be the best picture of him ever taken on their cover
bigger shown you know chosen from a hundred different pictures member the
bug-eyed picture Michele Bachmann
you are you today about your show a bad picture you job at picture
right now don't get me wrong the country's the article is
what he did he looks like one of us he looks like a young guy who might be
reading
Rolling Stone right but he turns out to be a monster monster
also the article isn't you know isn't bad at all I think that they did a
pretty good job with it but the cover just sends the wrong message
and glorifying people like this is a bad idea and I i love that you mentioned
the bomber because that really stands out to you as well and it's like
there are so many cycle people out there that are obsessed with fame and they are
willing to chase after that famous
any price and you don't want to egg them on you don't want to glorify
anyone who's done anything this hideous so I can totally understand why people
are upset about it but what's so amazing is rolling stone seems to stand by the
cover
they seem to justified in the statement that they released after the criticism
so let me read that to you guys
they said our hearts go out to the victims the Boston Marathon bombing
and our thoughts are always with them and their families the cover story we're
publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling
Stones long-standing commitment too serious and thoughtful coverage
the most important political and cultural issues up our day
the fact that so cars are naive is young
and in the same age group as many of our readers makes it all the more important
for us to examine the complexities
%uh this issue and gain a more complete understanding up how a tragedy like this
happens
so I'm 50-50 on a statement I had to say whether say
look a lot of our readers might look at them go how could this happen that guy
looks like the guy next door
and so that's what legitimate but other have it is common you know what you're
doing
you know it's going again create get controversy you know that everybody's
gonna be talking about a
it's not like that was lost on you sound like you had editorial meeting in nobody
was like
ruling made a brief you guys with that looks like this kinda cool cover
now these you to my second point I immediately followed by Jim Morrison
cover from rolling Stone it's like I i think what are their most famous covers
so when I was thinking when I think a rolling stone wow that's amazing
right that's a great comparison and so
now you got this guy lookin literally like a rockstar
on your cover and so I know you want to cover it
and whether you have your cover story on it is a different question what picture
you
pic is a question I think the cross the line from just coverage
to almost glorified do you feel that the new
that this backlash was coming when they published this photo
yeah I think I look they do it on purpose and it's not just released on a
lotta magazines do they go up
or did we put in a good person on the cover evokes always other guys you
receive you
right enroll as soon as done this in the past and they point to it too I mean
obviously
you've got that very ago a good example if
right and is not I didn't know he liked will people be talking about
the guy's hands on it *** overall it's the new
and thats Yoko Ono and John Lennon he was shot five hours after the picture
this
went with it anyway nine so here's the 1i wanna talk about
Charles Manson so that's about all we barely put rose messin up
up you know on their cover they salute we did man so why can't we do the bar
but
the mess and did become kinda a rockstar you know
everybody talked about Charles Manson I mean not just use the Rolling Stone
cover: obviously
but it's not like people think charles manson is awesome
but he became this huge figure
at ever the people talking about and that's not it appealing to us
but if you're psycho out there you wanna maybe think like maybe I could be the
next Charles Mason
every song about rose Mesa trolls Mason is so famous
right so I don't think they're proves their case it is not a big deal
it might actually do the office yeah I think it's a huge deal on agree with you
that they probably knew that this was gonna
lead to a lot of criticism when he published it
now there are few %uh stores and have refused to sell this
August issue a rolling stone CBS is one of those stores
Walgreens is also I decided to not a to boycott this
issue CBS did release a statement and they say at that they have decided not
to sell the current issue of Rolling Stone featuring a cover photo the boston
Mayor
marathon bombing suspect as a company with deep roots in New England in a
strong presence in Boston we believe this is the right decision
and respect for the victims up the attack and their loved ones and that's
something that I don't think
is being considered enough in these discussions how people feel
if you they had a family member that died as a result of this bombing and
then you see this *** on the cover being glorified like that
yeah and wright also decide not to go
goal with the Rolling Stone this month in their stores
and I agree with them now look Roy so has every right to publish it anywhere
they like
of course for you in the press were lives there's no way we disagree with
that
but also CBS has the right to make this decision and they're not making a
prudish decision
you know they're not making it out of some sort of like the
nonsense moralistic point of view I think they're right in that
hey this is this is not the right direction you want to go it sends the
wrong message
