A damning report into security failures
at the Ministry of Social Development
shows WINZ systems weren't tested
and the risk of privacy breaches was underestimated.
The findings follow an inquiry
into how personal information was accessed at Work and Income kiosks.
According to the Deloittes report, MSD failed to listen
to security warnings, and management weren't told of the risks.
The report identify failure to separate the kiosks
from the Ministry's main network was the major issue.
Blogger Keith Ng and one of the Urewera 18, Ira Bailey,
accessed the personal data
of over 1400 people at the Work and Income kiosks.
And if people want to know whether their privacy was breached,
they will have to contact the Ministry.
