MICHAEL LEWIS: Michael Lewis here with the Yeshua's Ryu Martial Arts on behalf of Expert
Village. We are talking today about chokes and headlocks, how to apply them and also
how to get out of them. The most important thing in a self-defense situation is if you
are being choked or somebody even has just their hands around your neck and is trying
to strangle you or a headlock is to stay calm. It is one of the most important key elements
in self-defense, but especially when someone is choking you. You have, your air is getting
cut off and everything else. If you start to freak out and start to panic, you are actually
going to burn up more of that oxygen and so you are going to need to take a breath sooner.
If you stay calm, stay relaxed, you will be able to focus on what you need to do to get
out of that technique or get out of that headlock or choke. And also, you will not waste all
your energy just panicking. You will be able to expend that energy on trying to get out
of the technique. So again, freaking out is not a good thing at all. You have to stay
calm. Also, when you are training with a partner and you are grappling on the ground, as you
are grappling you get somebody in a headlock, you definitely do not want to freak out them
because there is also a risk of injury. And you do not want to injure the other person.
And so as you are training, make sure, definitely, to stay calm. What you can do to help yourself
stay calm is to actually apply these techniques slowly, calmly apply them into a point where
you cannot stand it, stand anymore pressure in your neck and go ahead and tap out. But
get comfortable with that technique being applied to your neck. Many people are not
really comfortable with anything touching their neck. So it takes a little bit more
of training to be able to become comfortable with that. So again, I stress the importance
of staying calm and also fear just being a big part of getting injured.
