>> Welcome to the iFALCON interview.
Many of our students at Cerritos College have gone through a variety of challenges
during the course of their lives.
These challenges have had significant effects upon where they are right now.
Today, we have Justin.
Thank you, Justin, for participating in the iFALCON interview.
Can you briefly describe for us your educational journey,
prior to coming to Cerritos,
as well as,
how things have gone since you've arrived here at Cerritos College.
>> Well, before I attended Cerritos College, I just went to high school.
I honestly didn't care, too much about school. It was just a place uh... to be with friends,
or just somewhere I had to go to play video games but before I got home.
Uh... but
when I join Cerritos College, I realized how important school was for me,
and I'd..
that's what changed for me.
>> Good, very good.
Since you've arrived at Cerritos, how's things changed here? What, what was has taken place
that kinda changed your thought process about your education?
>> Well, when I walked into Cerritos, like my first time, I realize that this is the spot where I need
to make a change
for my future 'cause I realize that the good grades I got here at Cerritos would determine
how well I did for
my future and in my career
for the rest of my life.
>> If you had to choose one key moment or experience or event
in your life that kinda of turned you around,
open your eyes um... made a difference in your life, what would that be and how did that
situation
impact you, as far as, the direction that you're currently going?
>> Well, it's hard to pick one
particular moment, it wasn't like one snap, >> Okay. >> just like, when I started attending my three classes
that I started uh...
my first uh... semester of college back in the fall,
I had greater responsiblities that I had to take care of, I had homework and tests and quizzes and stuff
I had to worry about my own. I did not have any teachers holding my hand, doing any reviews or
anything. I just had to know the stuff by the test.
So I realized.. and knowing that this is
what uh... my future is relying on,
I just had to step up, and do what I needed to do.
>> So, it was something where you took responsibility
for your future primarily.
>> It was a realization of a necessity to do my best in school.
>> That's great!
Well, obviously you've had some success, Justin, and I know you're going to have continued
success. But,
where do you hope the success takes you?
What, what's your goal, what's your dream?
>> Well, I've been doing more and more
as I go along, go along in school.
I started out just doing my schoolwork, and then I got involved in clubs, then I got involved
in government, I'm doing as much as I can right now, and I always want to press on and do as much as I
can, the best I can.
Uh... I eventually want to attend, going to a UC, and getting a job helping other people.
Cause I'm an Econ major, I want to educate people
about Econ, and how it's important, how it affects everybody in their lives and uh... it's something
people don't care about enough, they think it's boring
or they just don't even know enough about it. It's very important, it affects everybody,
and, it's just something that people should know.
>> That's great!
As you know, Justin, the acronyms for iFALCON represent Focus, Advance, Link-Up,
Comprehend,
Organize, and New Ideas.
Out of those is there any particular acronym that has been very helpful for you as you
prepare for your day-to-day
classes, as well as you prepare for your future?
>> I would have to say New Ideas. >> New Ideas, okay.
Can you tell us a little about that?
>> Well, coming to school, I had a new idea that I needed to do my work,
but, it doesn't sound like a new idea, but it was a new idea to me.
Uh... as I went on at Cerritos College,
I had discovered new ideas to be more involved in clubs,
be more involved in government issues, uh...
the most I can do. I discovered new things, and then did everything I could
to
do what's best for my school.
So, New Ideas. >> Okay, that's great!
Justin,
you know, our students, and I'm sure you probably have uh... had this happen to you
as well,
they get very, very frustrated, some of the day-to-day challenges
of going to class and being prepared for class
uh... it... you know, becomes a very stressful situation for many of our students.
Is there any idea or thoughts or anything you would like to share with the group that's
viewing this interview, that you think would be helpful to help them as they prepare for
each and every day for for class?
>> Uh... what I'd say just, a
I think students need to learn to
like what they're studying, they need to realize that school is something that they love, it's something
that they need for education in the future. Once you have that realization, you know that
uh... it was a new idea for me, my uh... brother told me that you need to learn to love
school. And I thought that was such a strange concept. That this new idea encouraged me to get
involved in my economics, which is my major, I love of Econ.
So, if you love the course that you're studying,
you'll love school, you'll love learning about it, you'll be happy to study for your tests, and do all your
homework as best you can.
That's the new idea that really helped me out.
>> So passion has a lot to do with
your success? >> Passion is a
great deal part of that.
>> Very good!
Well Justin, we really do appreciate you being here today and sharing your journey as
well as your insights
and what has helped you become a better student.
Congratulations on your success and your achievements and we wish you nothing but the best for continued
success. >> Thank you sir. 0:05:38.450,0:0!5:40.099 >> Your welcome

and respond to.
iFALCON wants to know what you think,
so here it is.
Question number 1,
has this interview provided positive information,
encouragement,
or simply helped you better understand
what it takes to be a better student,
if so, how?
Question number 2,
do you already use any of the iFALCON acronyms
as you prepare for class?
If so, which ones have you found
most helpful, and why?
Please take a few moments to respond.
iFALCON thanks you
