In Namibia, in Windhoek, this Katutura
this "place where we don't want to live" is the literal translation
was built in the early 50s
and then people were forcibly relocated
that had lived much closer to the city before.
This is the actuall city
and the old location
In the year 1949, the National Party reached majority in South Africa
Those were the ones that had Apartheid in their programme,
which means that the blacks and the whites
were meant to have different developments, different living spaces,
different everything.
So this is where Katutura was built vor the blacks
You can always
recognize townships on maps
because the streets are a lot more narrow than in
the white city.
and here, in between, between the actuall city
and the township, is industrial area
the "Cordon Sanitaire"
Public authorities, just now you saw the Prison,
police station,
hospital
and also just broke country, as you can see here
and why industrial?
well, no one lives there, it creates space inbetween
and no one will move there, you could say
that it's a kind of a safe distance
Of course that means that
socially,
the effects will last a long long time.
