My name is Wayne Phelps. I’m a professional magician. This is expertvillage.com. What
I want to teach you guys is how to do a retention vanish. This is a very basic move in magic,
and it’s used in a lot of coin effects, it’s how we vanish a coin from one hand
to another. This is what a retention vanish looks like. It’s used to vanish a coin once
it’s placed in your hand, just like that. The coin is gone. Did you see it move? That’s
right, I’ll do it for you one more time and see if you can catch it. The coin was
into my hand and it vanishes. This is how it is done. The retention coin works by snapping
your fingers. These are the same motions we use. When the coins in your hand move the
middle finger down and that moves the coin parallel to your index finger. Index finger
hides the coin. When you bring the coin over in your hand it rests against the muscle of
the thumb. Your fingers will close like a venus flytrap. When they do that, perform
the retention at the same time, pull your left hand away and drop it to your side. At
this time you’re free to go ahead and position the coin in your finger palm or in a classic
palm position. Let it go limp, let it be natural while you focus all your attention on your
left hand, bring your left hand up, look at it, vanish the coin and now you can go into
whatever else you’re going to do next. That’s a retention vanish.
