Childhood Perfumes
I have a lot a good memories in this workshop.
For a child, it was absolutely amazing to be here, we worked the wood, we could here the sound of cutting machines...
But overall, smells the wood dust created by sanding, the hot glue...
Since my eldest age, I have been nourished in this athmosphere
When I decided to make something of my life In a certain way, it was normal to join the family's workshop
The family "Nicolet" set up in the 7th district of Paris in 1920's
My grand father and grand mother openned a commerce of Antics
And, my grand father wanted to better control the activity by opening a cabinet making workshop...
In 1978, I decided to resume the family workshop
Always handling antics and the cabinet making workshop...
When I decided to completely give up the antics and being fully dedicated to the creation
It's mainly due to my son who did the Parisian school of creation "Boulle".
He was seeing me drawing for few years
But I didn't really dare being exclusively "Creator"
And my son told me: Listen dad, your drawings are really good Only do few things in advance
Display it in your store, you will have the feedbacks of people.
And the success came immediately!
I'm doing a sun in ebony of makassar
I'm going to draw the cutting piece
I'm using wooden pencil which is the most obvious on ebony.
We turn it up And here is the first sun in Ebony of Makassar
Then, a second one made in Zebrano wood
Here is the top of the side table that I'm currently doing
To get the ellipses in random way I'm using bones
These are bones from Argentinan cows... The most beautiful, the whitest... really the best one.
I cut it like a slice of sausage
Here is the result, sanded, vernished...
And now we can see the Leopard aspect of this amazing wood.
And the white bone Everything is vernished with an incolor vernish.
This technic of finishing gives a very interesting visual aspect.
When we make a piece of furniture, we have to be very patient
It's not only about vernishing. All the work done before has to be perfect.
The wood has to be sweet like a baby skin.
All the woods have be very well sanded We put it in hot water in order to sand it again till getting the perfect sweetness
I'm going to show you one of my cave where I keep all my rare woods
Rare location !
I have approximately 100 sq.m2 of cave whichs allow me to keep my woods
with the ideal temperature and humidity rate
Here, I store the zebrano wood which is the wood I used to make the sun earlier
Here you see, you have many veneers because I buy the whole tree and I make it cut by specialist
Here it's only 2.5mm thick.
And finally, here you have the famous Rosewood.
We sand it, the smell of rosewood suddenly appears....
And I'm back to my 5 years old...
