I'm James Howell in Bio Chemistry
and Molecular Biology at Penn State University Park. We just
piloted a new course for students coming into our majors. And we
called it Majors Colloquium. It was about eighty students and we met in a big auditorium.
Most of the course meetings were discussions led
by teams of four students. The students on those teams had prepared video
lectures that we all watched beforehand outside of class. The teams had
also written open-ended discussion questions to prompt everyone in class to think
deeply about the science and more importantly to think about
the connections to human consequences. We used class time to work through
the discussion questions in small groups. The presenting students facilitated these discussions
with help from four peer learning assistants and from me.
Some of the students loved it and some of them hated it. We will
have two students, who took the course, the four learning assistants, and me
to answer your questions about what we learned when we piloted this course in the fall.
