Prenuptial agreements are generally sought by people who have assets or
need to take care of things that they already have in their lives before they
come together in this marriage. And people who want to know exactly how
it's going to work in case this marriage doesn't work out. An example of that would be
a middle-aged couple who have children by other spouses and assets so that everyone
wants to know if this marriage doesn't work or if someone dies how the assets are going
to be distributed and how, how the relationship is going to play out. Another time
would be when someone has a lot more wealth than someone else. Generally, we advise
our clients not to work these out themselves. Your line is "Oh my darling I love you forever and
this is going to last forever but these nasty lawyers are making us do this prenuptial agreement
and so let's just let the lawyers work this out." And we take the fall, throw us under the
truck any time you want to because we don't want our clients to suffer just because they
really do legally need a prenuptial agreement. I think Sir Paul McCartney could be someone
who could speak to that very well. But they're very useful devices for reassuring the other
people in your life that they will not be forgotten because you're getting married to someone else.
