Hello and welcome to Library Essentials for Graduate students. This video will provide
you with a brief introduction to research tools you’ll find at LibraryConnect.
My name is Elaine Settergren. I’m the Online Librarian. I am available to answer your questions
during weekdays. I’m here on the left. Alyssa Novak is here on the right. She’s the Associate
Online Librarian. She can answer your questions in the evenings and on Sundays. We’re happy
to help you with any research or citation questions that you have.
Let’s take a look at what the library has to offer. The best place to start is at the
guide for Business. This is where you’ll find information about relevant ebooks, databases,
magazines and more! I’ll show you a few research tools today, but feel free to explore
the guide and look at the tabs a little bit later. You’ll also find more videos that
go into different type of searches in more depth throughout this guide.
Let’s talk about eBooks first. The library has over 120,000 ebooks available for you.
Let’s do a sample search. Many of these are downloadable. If you’re using a computer,
you can download them with Adobe Digital Editions software. On your iPad, you’ll need the
Bluefire Reader app to download them. You can find ebooks by searching the Library Catalog
then narrowing to eBooks. Then I can click to view now or I can click on the title.
Let’s go back and talk about databases. I’ll go to the articles tab. You can see
a search box here for MultiSearch. That will let you search multiple databases at once,
but not every database. I’d like to show you the business databases individually because
there are some special searching features that you won’t be able to access in MultiSearch.
The first one I want to talk about is Business Source Complete. You can definitely run a
search using the search box, and as you can see, you can automatically narrow down your
results to scholarly or academic type articles. Business Source Complete has a lot of great
articles about general business topics such as management, finance, human resources, etc.
Let’s take a look at this advanced search page.
This is where you’ll see some of the special searches There are company, country, industry,
market research reports, and SWOT analyses. These are going to be Marketline SWOT analyses.
These are very valuable. You can see these go for $200 per report on the web. So it’s
very awesome that we have these for free in Business Source Complete.
Let’s look at another database. First Research is a database for industry research. You’ll
have to click continue a few times to get to the search screen. Once you’re able to
search, you’ll find industry overviews, forecasts and issues along with some financial
information. You’ll also see the NAICS code which is the code for the industry that you
can use for searching in other databases such as Business Source Complete or LexisNexis
Academic. Speaking of LexisNexis Academic, let’s take
a look at this one. You’ll see six main search boxes here. You can use this one to
find company information. If you’d like to explore other business research, there’s
a section here on the left-hand navigation. You’ll find company profiles and will be
able to make a list of companies. LexisNexis Academic is good for finding country information,
and news information. The last database I want to tell you about
today is Small Business Resource Center. In this database, you’ll find over 500 sample
business plans. These are business plans for existing businesses, but the names and locations
have been changed so you won’t find any companies you recognize. This database also
has other entrepreneurship related articles. In summary, the guide for business is the
best place to start because it will narrow down the library’s resources to just those
about business. We have databases and the Library Catalog for company research, entrepreneurship,
industry research, and other business topics. If you’re not finding what you need, please
be sure to ask one of the librarians. You can find our contact information in this contact
ask a librarian link in the green navigation bar.
Thank you for watching this brief introduction to library resources for Graduate students.
Have a great day!
