Hello my dear Deutsch Happen viewers and welcome to our video about the vocabulary
concerning or around or about fortified cities and so on.
We are here on the city wall of the town of Saint Malo and a city wall is
"die Stadtmauer, die Stadtmauer". And as you can all see, I am sitting on one of the old or even antique canons
which is "die Kanone, die Kanone"
When we are looking around here you can see that Saint Malo is not only fortified by its own city walls
that go once all around the city but you can also see little forts or fortresses all around here
that basically made it impossible to captivate the city. So these forts or fortresses are called
"die Festung" singular or plural "die Festungen".
And most of these were build by a very famous french military architect called Vauban, so his name was Vauban.
And the word for this job is very similar in German, it's "der Militärarchitekt, der Militärarchitekt".
Ok, I'd say we have seen all around here. Let's go on a little bit and I tell you some more vocabulary related to our topic for today.
As I had already mentioned, in history nobody had ever been able to conquer the city of Saint Malo due to its ideal positioning
and of course its very heavy fortification. So a fortification and the verb to fortify a city are in German
"die Befestigung" and "befestigen" is the verb. "die Befestigung, befestigen".
And this was of course for the people inside to protect their city naturally, so
"zum Schutz" protection or to protect "um die Stadt zu schützen" to protect the city.
Alright. And on the other hand nobody was able to conquer the city. Conquer or conquest
"erobern" or "die Eroberung, die Eroberung".
In the background you see a very nice example of the fortification which is one of the big towers
and that is in German "der Befestigungsturm, der Befestigungsturm".
So, the population of Saint Malo was always able to defend their city.
Defend "verteidigen" - "Die Menschen konnten die Stadt immer verteidigen".
So nobody was able to occupy it. And therefore like the seagulls I mentioned before
also today they are still modern pirates just their target setting changed a little bit.
and they are pirating tourists nowadays. I hope that was helpful. Take care everybody, see you soon back for an other video. Bye bye.
