Hi, I'm Tonya Duncan, and by now you know I'm your Green Party congressional candidate for Michigan's 3rd District.
In this video, I'd like to talk with you about the state of our environment.
Recently, scientists have measured CO2 levels at 400 ppm.
There is no longer any doubt in the reasonable scientific community of man's contribution to this global climate change.
Scientists agree that without immediate action to mitigate the effects of this change, many deaths will occur.
But there is no need to sacrifice the environment in the name of jobs and growth.
It is entirely possible to build an ecologically sustainable economy and build wiser relationships with the natural world using existing technology such as solar power, wind power, and geothermal energy.
Clean water is a human right and a public trust, as such, we need to ban fracking, sulfide mining, and strip-mining; we can develop truly renewable energy sources and we should oppose new nuclear plants and close old ones.
We can continue to fund research in truly renewable energy resources, such as wind, solar, and geothermal technologies.
We must oppose offshore oil drilling, and dangerous pipelines such as Keystone XL, Enbridge Mackinac, tar sands, coal, and biomass,
and instead promote sustainable technologies like the Duke University and Lloyd Ray Farms Swine Waste-To-Energy Offsets Project,
which is just one project that reduces greenhouse emissions and simultaneously produces power using hog waste.
We should decentralize power generation when feasible and let communities make decisions on big energy projects near them.
We can work together to reduce energy use, by building efficient public transportation, reducing driving, and minimizing road-salt use.
We should oppose CAFOs, factory farms, and support small-scale organic agriculture.
We should also oppose GMOs - which increase exposure to pesticides and reduce bio-diversity.
And, we should work to reduce suburban sprawl, which will help to lower overall carbon emissions.
Lastly, we should try, when possible, to buy products which are made or, at the very least, sold locally because these dollars stay in our local communities.
Together, we can find solutions. Send me your ideas. Let's get this done. Solidarity.
