Hi Everyone! Welcome to Ms Due's
Algebra or PreAlgebra class
Today we're going to talk about the flipped classroom this video was done on Prezi.
It's pretty cool. If you want to know how to do it just come see me and I'll help with it.
Many educators including Mrs. Dulaney and I are experimenting with the idea
of a Flipped Classroom Model.
So...what is it...
and why is everyone talking about it?
The Flipped Classroom inverts traditional teaching methods, delivering
instruction online outside of class and moving homework into the classroom.
the inversion is that you originally had a traditional classroom where the
teacher's role was to lecturer,
they call it a sage on the stage where the teacher is lecturing and teaching you
teaching you how to do things and then you go home
and you do the problems. The Flipped idea
is that now, at home, you watch lectures
online
and learn about concepts online and then you come in practice what you
learned online in the classroom.
The teachers role is changed and I'm now a guide on the side
instead of someone who
you can't even access at night to help you with problems that you're working on.
So what does a Flipped Classroom do? Student watch lectures
at home with their own pace
and then communicate with peers and teachers via online discussions now the
second part of that the communicating with peers and teachers
via online discussions this
discussions is something that will probably do later
but the powerful piece of this is that you're watching lectures at home
at your own pace that way you can pause the video, rewind it
you can watch things over and that's a very powerful piece of this model the
concept engagement, engaging yourself in the concept
takes place in the classroom with the help of the instructor so instead of
doing problems at home
you mail
stepping
you didn't lectures at home
in the new coming to class and practice there's uh... problems in class where i
can help you
so what is driving this will be rs two key factors that are driving the
increased adoption at the foot classroom model
first of all
outpour learning outcomes the traditional one size fits all model of
education often results in limiting concept to gauge mint
even severe consequences
you can see that by the graphic here only sixty nine percent steve to start
high school
finish four years later
assad way is the prevalence of online video in other words
the availability of online videos and online video lessons are ones that you
might be familiar with it's is the content of the american people after
three there's an australian distance here
but also the increasing student access to technology
is also pave the way for the foot classroom models
so what does it look like well many schools in classrooms have adopted it
here we're gonna look at clinton bail
high school near detroit
uh... which is employed the foot classroom model two great success
so how does that work what teachers create three billion so we got probably
might we hear tumor warren just appealing
arm students watched the five to seven minute videos at home
or it's cool if you don't have internet access at home
and i think last time was spent doing lambs are interactive activities to
illustrate the concepts that she learned at home at night
some of the benefits are state students receive instant feedback in other words
when you're working on a problem teachers have more time to help students
and explain difficult concepts in class uh...
anything that she didn't understand the night before we can address more readily
students don't get is frustrated before many students wouldn't complete homework
if they got frustrated with that working on problems in the class minimizes this
problem
another benefit is the teachers revisit concept students don't understand
so uh... using your fled notebook which will talk about a little bit
you right there with some reinventing the elements of the questions you can
so after he watched the lessons you write down those questions and then
we can review those questions either as a class were individually
teacher support students in class students who might not have technology
for parents to help him outside of school now have teachers guiding them in
class so if you don't have that technology will work up a workaround
so it's about changing instructional models said the students can receive
more instructional support in the classroom
from the experts that
turkey five hanson staff
here are the results for clinton being a high school this is what actually
happened so before the flip classroom
over fifty percent of freshmen failed english
and over forty percent of freshmen failed me
yesterday thought the class early after they did this model
nineteen percent of freshmen failed english
in thirteen percent of freshmen failed me
one of the requirements for you
you are required to do the whisk-broom this is an act that he ask you stands
for things that you have to do when it's pronounced whisk civic w in the west by
no means you watch the video
w mean just watch simply watch
the s
stance for summarizing your going to use your what notebook
to write down the important concept you've learned from the video
number two you're gonna write new less than five sentences
number three you're gonna write down any procedures so that you understand what
you're doing so that you have that
you know about them but that one
in number for your and complete any practice problems given
and make sure you can explain how you arrived at your hips or the next day
we will discuss these uh... summer summaries for the next day in class
leaky rusty in sport westerns and you can three options here
first option
you can write down no less than two questions if you have
or questions about the media is something you didn't understand that
great
but please write down no less than two questions
and that you need clarification on
you can also maybe you know everything they do you get this concept and you
don't have any questions for me well
right down to questions to ask of your peers that you know the answer to
and write down their seats are still
or three even write one question eighty two bob
but you have to write at least two questions
so be ready to share what you learn from the video using your summary in the
questions you generated in the next class period
so that's the
flipped classroom are
it's a very innovative teaching
it's innovative learning
i think you enjoy that
so go ahead and operate your summary now
we'll look at this in class you have any questions
uh... write this down also and have a great night
