In this tutorial, we will discuss how to configure Vanity Name Servers in your DNS Made Easy account.
Vanity Name Servers allow you to use your own domain name to rebrand the DNS Made Easy name server host names.
To start, you would choose the host names you would like to use for your vanity NS configuration.
We will create ns0-ns4.example.com.
Following is a brief overview of the steps involved in this process.
Name your name servers - Assign names to the name servers’ IPs that were assigned to your domains in DNS Made Easy.
Create the A records for those name servers in the appropriate domain. This assigns the names to the IPs.
At the registrar - Register the name servers. This matches the A records with the name servers that you created in step 2.
Create a Vanity DNS configuration in DNS Made Easy.
Assign/Apply the domain to use the Vanity DNS configuration in DNS Made Easy.
At the registrar - Tell the registrar to use the vanity name servers that you have created.
To add these Vanity Name Servers to additional domains, repeat steps 5 and 6.
First, click on Managed DNS under the DNS option on the main menu.
Once there, select the domain name you would like to apply Vanity name servers to
by either selecting it from the Recently Updated Domains list, or by entering it into the Domain Name search field.
In this example, we will be using the domain, example.com.
Once your domain has been selected, click on the Name Servers tab to reveal the IP addresses and FQDNs of the name servers
DNS Made Easy has assigned to your domain.
Note down these IP addresses as you’re going to need them for the next step where we are going to create some A Records.
If you need a refresher on working with A Records, please view the video tutorial, Working With A Records.
Once you have your IPs, click on the Records tab to bring up the records grid.
Click on the Plus sign associated with the A Records grid to open the Add A Records window.
Under the name field, enter ns0 as the first vanity name server host name is ns0.example.com.
In the IP field, you will want to enter the first of your IP addresses from the Name Servers tab.
Hit Submit to create the record.
Repeat this process-adding all of your name server host names and entering the next IP address on your list each time.
In our example, we are creating the additional host names ns0-ns4.example.com.
Please Note: You can configure a vanity name server to match each of the DNS Made Easy name server host names.
You can also use configurations of 2, 3, or 4 Vanity Name Servers.
To maximize redundancy, try and use as many of our name servers as your registrar will allow.
Once you’ve created all of your ns records,
you’ll want to go to your registrar and register the hosts to create the associated name servers on the TLD name servers.
Please Note: This step must be completed with your registrar.
If you require assistance with this step,
you must inquire with their support team as we cannot access your registrar account information.
This step must be completed before you can proceed.
Once completed, return to the DNS Made Easy interface, mouse over the Advanced tab, and select Vanity Nameservers from the dropdown.
Click on the plus sign associated with the Vanity Namerserver Configurations.
Use a readily identifiable name to help keep track of this group of name servers. In our name field, we’re going to enter ns0-5.example.com.
Type your first host name, which for us is ns0.example.com.
Create each of your additional host names on the subsequent lines and click Submit to finalize your changes.
Once your changes are made, bring up your domain again within the Managed DNS section.
Click the Settings tab, and click to dropdown the Vanity/NS Config list.
Choose the group of Name Servers you just created; in this case ns0-4.example.com, and click Save.
To confirm the configuration is correct, click on the Records tab, and scroll down to the System NS Records grid.
You should see the name servers you just created listed here.
Once you’ve confirmed that all NS records have been added correctly, click on the Name Servers tab.
Here, you can see the newly-added Delegated name servers list.
This list contains the FQDNs for the vanity name servers we just configured.
Go back to your registrar and change the assigned name servers there to match your list of delegated name servers here.
Please Note: Make certain the delegated name servers at your registrar match exactly to the ones you just created in DNS Made Easy;
otherwise the domain will not pass DNS validation checks.
To use these name servers with other domains in your account, simply open the domain in the Managed DNS Section,
hit the Settings tab, and select the group from the dropdown.
Vanity Name Servers are an incredibly effective way to rebrand your name servers both quickly and easily.
