The roller is a very unique weapon type and also one of the funnest.
Even though I didn't care for it in the first game
I've been having a great time with the changes made for Splatoon 2
so here are some tips for utilizing the unique mechanics of the weapon some ideas of how to avoid falling victim to some of the
roller's weaknesses and most importantly how to have fun with it

I'm about to explain how the roller works, if you're already familiar with the basics just skip ahead to the two-minute 15 marks
So, attacking with the roller
In Splatoon 2 the Roller has three ways of dealing damage. The first is by using it well like a roller
By holding down the zr
Button your character will hold the roller to the ground so you can paint as you run?
It will do damage to enemies that you run into and it will instantly splat any enemies you run over that are in squid form
This has resulted in many
Accidental kills for me, although, I should point out when it comes to combat
this is the least effective way of getting splats.
Because simply if enemies see you rolling at them that it's going to shoot you before you can reach them
The second form of attack comes through tapping the ZR buttons, this causes your character to slam the roller on the ground
this is an instant splatter for enemies hit by the center of the roller and
also flinging a splash of ink
Covering the general area ahead of you which does an amount of damage depending on your distance from the Target?
The further they are the less damage it does, you might relate it to a shotgun blast. It's only useful really at close range
Evolving from the first splatoon in Splatoon 2 they've added an extra type of attack
This is in the form of a ranged slam which can be activated by jumping and tapping ZR
This will cause the roller to turn vertically and swing a long line of ink and considerable distance as with a normal slam
Hitting an enemy with the roll arcing will result in a splash
With a basic understanding of the mechanics of the weapons let's talk tactics
The Roller might come across as ineffective as a weapon, but it's all about the situations in which you engage
If all you had was a sword you wouldn't run head-on at someone with a gun same deal here with the roller in a head-on
Engagement with say a splatter shot you're probably not going to enjoy yourself
The Roller is super satisfying to get kills with trust me
You can't be running or swimming head-on at people read the situation and find alternate paths
sneak around behind people or my absolute favorites jump down from above as
You jump aim to land just behind them and hold that up so that even if you miss they won't have time to react before
You splat them anyway. It's very satisfying
Now my personal favorite surprise kills
in contradiction to my tip in my last video are not seeking splat centre for
There is an amazing amount of fun to be has been hiding around a corner or even a means in front of them
Jumping up and slamming your roller down on some jumps hence it can be relatively easy to predict the positive enemies
And they will naturally be drawn to patches of your ink with the intention of covering it obviously
so you might even take your photos with a patch of your ink near to your hiding spot as
The game is in third person you can cheekily peek around the corner perfectly hidden in your own ink and squid form ready to strike
don't forget your invisible if you don't move
Be mindful of the distance between you and your enemy and consider which kind of strike
We'll need to use if those making distance you may need to finish them off with a jumping strike as opposed to the close-range land
But if you're in my team's, please remember that the objective is to ink the most turf
please
What I like to call the sub weapon sneak
If skip only applies to the splat Roller Loadout featuring the curling bombs
In fact you can apply this to any weapon featuring the curling bombs
It's pretty simple launch or curling bomb and swimming the ink trail left behind it
It's a great way to push into enemy territory and sneak behind or even sneak up on unsuspecting enemy
Be wary however that it can leave you vulnerable if enemies in two paths between you and your bomb one last mode it works
Fantastically with a ninja squid ability which makes you hard to see when swimming an ink
The last-minute push, this is something that applies to all weapons, and I can see this tip being a point of contention as well
Or maybe something that goes without saying but there's countless times that is one my team the game
During the last few moments of a match where your team's ink stomping was trapped in your spawn
Trying to think behind the front line
Possible using a felling bomb an ink as much turf as possible to climb the enemies while they're dizzy in your face often times
They're so distracted with keeping you locked in so they won't notice what you're doing behind them
Even better is when one or two of your teammates jump to you
I can't imagine this working in the higher levels of play
But even when it doesn't win you the game it turns a frustrating situation into something fun
