I am Celina Baguiao, College of the Canyons Sports Information Director.
In the second installment of the mid-season report, we will take a look at men’s golf.
Many people don’t know that the men’s golf team is the most successful program in
COC athletics history.
With five state titles and the last one in 2008, COC is due for another one – and this
might be the year.
Our season starts in early January, and from the moment we completed the first
round I knew that this may be a special team.
We have more depth than I’ve had in probably in the thirty-one years of coaching.
We have some really top-flight players who have proven themselves throughout
the season.
And I knew that this was going to be a special season, I wasn’t quite sure how
special.
But the key is, is that its only as special as it is on the last day in May.
Either we walk away with a state Championship or we don’t.
How special is this team?
Well, the Cougars have played in 10 tournaments this season, including a division I
tournament, and have not lost one yet.
The team does not have a player whose stroke average is outside of the top-15 in
the conference.
Three of the top four golfers in the conference wear COC on their shirts.
And they broke a school record for lowest team score with a 10-under par earlier
this year.
With only two more conference tournaments left on the schedule and the
conference finals at the end of this month, how will COC remain hungry going into
post-season play.
The key is to keep them in the game, but as I said before not wind them up too
tight. I need them, were go in to into 3 weeks of 36-hole competition.
We are going to go into conference finals the first week, no the last week in April,
Southern California Regionals the first week in May, and the State Championship in
the second week in May.
The key is to wind it up a little bit each time, so when they get to the State
Championship, they’re primed and they’re ready to go.
We will focus on short game.
We will focus on conditioning.
We will focus on teamsmanship, keeping the team together.
But none of those things have been a problem so far.
The key is that we got to have fun.
We have got to work hard.
We have the goals, we just have to achieve the goals.
The Cougars will play in the Southern California Championships in early May and
the top four teams will move on to the State Championships on May 16.
