the vocabulary skill for unit 1
is suffixes each unit has a particular vocabulary skill
designed to help you grow or expand your vocabulary
and how you use the words. Suffixes are
endings that get added to words that can change the meaning
or the part of speech and what we talk about parts of speech
we're talking about things such as verbs
nouns adjectives
adverbs and other parts of speech such as conjunctions
it's important to be able to recognize
the part of speech because that will help you guess the meaning
of an unfamiliar word it will also help you
to expand or grow your vocabulary as you notice
other parts of speech in the same word-family
so for example if the you know
that a certain suffix changes the word into a noun
it helps you to know how to use that word
because we know that nouns can be used
in the subject position of a sentence
or also in the object position
if you know that a word is a verb
by it suffix then you also know how to use it
and so forth so listed here are some of the more common
noun suffixes when a word ends in
-acy -er or -or
-ment -ness
or -tion those words are usually
nouns so we have for example
accuracy researcher inventory
amusement friendliness attention
some of the common verb suffixes
are -ate -en
or -ize so some verbs
ending in those suffixes are stimulate
strengthen energized some common adjectives suffixes
are -able -al -ful
-ive and -ous so those
suffixes can be seen in the adjectives dependable
traditional careful effective
humorist and finally common adverb suffixes
most common -ly and -ally
for words like: particularly
and universally so you can see how important it is
to be able to understand the part of speech to know how to use the words
and the suffixes can become the clues
to help you identify which part of speech
a new word belongs to okay
let's practice with some of these suffixes and see if we can identify the parts of
speech
so the first word has been done for us
if we look at the word accuracy we see that the
suffix or the letters at the end are -acy
we now that -acy is a suffix
that is representing the noun
as a part of speech and if we think about where the word
acuracy comes from or what the base word
is without any endings that would be this word
accurate what about the word
assumption what the suffix? that's right
-tion
now we know that -T I O N
is a suffix that tells us the part of speech
is that's right noun
what's the base word for
assumption if you guessed
assume you are right
how about consciously
what is a suffix in unconsciously
that's right -L Y what part of speech
does the suffix -L Y indicate
yes adverb
and what do you think the base word is for consciously
if you guessed conscious
you're correct
so let's look at 4, 5 and 6
and 7 on your own identify the suffix
the part of speech and the base word
okay now that you've had a chance to think about it let's check your answers
so for number 4 prediction what is the suffix?
that's right -tion
which makes the word a noun
and the base word for prediction is
predict how about the word effectively
what's the suffix that's right
-ly and what part of speech
do we recognize with suffixes that ended in -ly
adverbs what's the base word
for effectively play alright
effective
and how about instinctive what's the suffix
-ive and that suffix tells us that the word
is an adjective
and the base word for instinctive
is instinct
how about selection what's the suffix
right another -tion which tells us it's a noun
and the base word is select
alright here's some sentences to help us practice using suffixes
to identify parts of speech so first we want to
figure out what part of speech the missing word should be
and then we can choose a suffix that we know
fits that part of speech so
let's try number one that video store offers a great
of classic movies there are so many it's hard to choose
so we have the adjective great right before the missing word so we're missing
a noun
so what suffix do we know that would
identify the word as a noun
and make sense in this sentence how about
selection that video store offers a great
selection number two
something is really important in grammar so you should try not to make mistakes
okay well we're missing a subject here so we know
were missing a noun so what kinda suffix for a noun here hmmm
how about accuracy
-acy tells us we have a noun
perfect accuracy is really important in grammar
number three we often make and something about people because it the way they
look
then we sometimes discover that our first impressions were incorrect
here we have the verb make we need a noun to follow it because we're missing
our direct object
so we need a suffix that will work or a noun
how about assumptions
we often make assumptions about people
number four I don't pay much attention to weather reports
their something are usually wrong it was supposed to be sunny yesterday
but it rained all day well again we are missing a subject
so we are missing a noun and so we need a suffix for a noun
so probably their
pre dictions
are wrong would fit here and we know -tion
is a suffix for a noun number five
if an advertisement is designed sales for the product will increase
so here we have a verb designed and we need a word to modify it
so we probably need some sort of an
adverb so what suffix would
give us an adverb here how about
effectively
and we know that -LY indicates an adverb
number six many animals have up fear of fire
and the danger it represents they don't learn it it's part of their nature
okay so here we're missing probably an adjective
because we want a word to modify the noun fear
so we need it active ending or suffix
how about instinctive
because we know that
-ive is an adjective ending
so many animals have an instinctive fear of fire
I have to make decisions very hmm when I go shopping
if I don't I buy things I really don't need
without even realizing it alright so here we are looking for
for some sort of an adverb because we want to describe how we make decisions
so probably in ending for an adverb
I have to make decisions very
hmm consciously
because we know that -LY indicates
an adverb hey we did it
here's our review suffixes are word endings
that can change the meaning and part of speech of a word
certain suffixes can help us identify whether a word is a noun
verb adjective or adverb
it's important to know which suffixes identify a word as a noun
verb adjective or adverb because this helps you to understand the meaning
and how to use the new word correctly
