Good morning, we're interviewing professor Alberto Oliart regarding IT.
First of all: why did you choose your major and what do you specialize in?
That is a very good question...
I started out studying Maths-
There's an intimate relationship between Mathematics and Computer Science.
For a mathematician, Computer Science is a dedicated branch of Maths.
Such as differential and integral calculus, modern algebra...
I got into this field after reviewing computer theory and automatization.
What IT areas do you consider to be most relevant today?
Data mining,
Big Data analysis
Processing of large data sets
That is an emerging practical application of Computer Science
This implies algorithms, intelligent systems...
Actually, if you think about it, Computer Science can be applied anywhere.
Now we're with Gilberto Hernández Herrera.
What did you major in?
I am an Electronics Systems engineer, what is now called Electronic Engineering Technology.
I have a master in Computer Science
It's equivalent to Computer Engineering Technology
Computer Networks, telecommunications,
development of electronics, computers,
evolution of processors, getting faster and faster
I lived through this transition.
What amazes me the most is the miniaturization of technology components
I remember back in the day when the first 20MB HDDs came out--
Identify what you like so you can continue with a postgraduate you enjoy.
We are with Fernando Prida.
He graduated from ITESM in Dic 2009
He's going to discuss IT with us
So, first, I'd like to ask why did you chose this major?
I have a straightforward answer,
Since elementary school I felt attracted to computers
the technology revolution was just starting...
Computers at school, videogame consoles...
That experience made me realize this is what I wanted to study
After a brief research I found out both videogames and software engineering have the same base.
So I chose 'ITC' which is the Computer Engineering Technology major here in ITESM Campus Puebla.
What areas of IT do you think are most relevant today?
and what do you currently specialize in?
An important part is cloud computing, as well as
a new business model called outsourcing
either services outsorcing and crowdsourcing are attracting much of our attention
Aaand... I specialize in Intelligent Systems and Visual Computing
Sup, we're with Rocío Aldeco, she's a teacher here in ITESM Puebla.
What is your area of specialization?
I majored in Computer Science. I have a BSc, MSc and PhD in Computer Science.
I specialize in Web Sciene
It's all about what we see happening in the web nowadays
From social networks, use of information and privacy.
What areas of IT do you think are most relevant now?
The web, in a semantic point of view
... Which means the information you see in a computer has a meaning for us, humans
it's not like the old days where the computer could only tell if it's an image or not
Now computers can figure the meaning of images and try to understand it in their own way
And process that information more efficiently.
It's the same thing with words and any type of data in general.
For example, I can say 'manzana' and 'apple', while both have the same meaning in two different languages.
That is what Semantic Web or Web 3.0 is all about.
We see it in every online application we use today. Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google, they work that way.
They're all based in semantic technology.
One last question, do you think ITESM students have an advantage over the rest?
I have teached in other institutes, and one can
easily tell that Tec students have elevated reasoning, abstraction and problem solving skills.
The reason is simple: all of our courses are planned that way
They're practic courses, where you have to solve problems and link them with real-world problems
What's the point of learning something if you don't have a practical use to it?
That problem is not present here.
Professors here, or at least those I have met, they make sure their students understand this relation
So that students who are challenged with a new problem can find a way to solve it with the tools they're provided with
Something I have quite not seen anywhere else.
And the contractors always vouch for ITESM students for this single reason.
Welp, thank you so much for your time. Take care!
