Debi Marie: [0:01] Welcome to another edition of Designing Spaces, the show that's all about
you and your space, your home and surroundings. I'm Debi Marie.
David Jones: [0:08] And I'm David Jones. Now, we've got a really interesting lineup for
you today. Lots of wow factor is about to happen.
Debi: [0:14] Yes, and we have a report on a new tool for every household connected to
the Internet with some fantastic features.
David: [0:19] And we've got some DIY projects for you. You know, here on Designing Spaces,
we cannot resist a good do it yourself home improvement project that will upgrade your
house and let you do it on a budget. We've got not one, but two of those coming up.
Debi: [0:31] Two. All right, and speaking of the wow factor, we have a report on an
industrial designer who is turning heads with his remarkable designs and concepts for interior
spaces, so you'll definitely want to stick around and see it all right here on Designing
Spaces.
[music plays]
Debi: [1:12] We have another great do it yourself project up next.
David: [1:14] That's right. And like we said earlier, there is a wow factor. It's one of
those projects where you think I think need to hire a contractor or maybe even a specialist.
But we're going to show you how to get great results by doing it yourself and saving some
dollars.
Debi: [1:27] Exactly. Take a look.
Man 1: [1:29] This stately home in La Grange, Illinois was built in 1925, but right now,
owner Heidi Jones is in the process of renovating it from top to bottom. Her next project, the
kitchen. And the first part of this project, tiling the backsplash. Heidi, thanks for having
us.
Heidi Jones: [1:45] Thank you. It is my pleasure.
Man 1: [1:47] This is quite a daunting task, getting this house done. The backsplash, tiling
it, not easy. Do you know what you're doing?
Heidi: [1:52] No. I don't have a clue. I really need the help.
Man 1: [1:54] Thus that's why we, Designing Spaces, are here. Well, I've brought some
experts to help you out, so let's get in right now and get started.
Heidi: [2:00] Perfect. Let's go.
[music plays]
Man 1: [2:02] All right, Heidi Jones. Meet my friend Rachel Gibbons from Specialty Construction
Brands.
Rachel Gibbons: [2:07] Hi, nice to meet you.
Heidi: [2:08] Really nice to meet you.
Man 1: [2:09] Can you believe she's the person that's going to help you out?
Heidi: [2:11] I love it.
Man 1: [2:11] No tool belt, no drill. She kind of looks too good to be doing this, right?
Rachel: [2:15] Well, you know, it's true that women especially don't think of tile as something
they might want to do themselves.
Heidi: [2:20] Right.
Rachel: [2:21] But I tell you, we can make this easy.
Man 1: [2:22] I know she can help you, and now you've got quite a project here. So where
do we get started?
Heidi: [2:26] Well, I have my tile, and I got at Lowe's, and I just love it.
Man 1: [2:30] It's pretty funky. I dig this.
Rachel: [2:33] Yeah, it's really a great tile choice. I think this is going to look great
in your kitchen.
Heidi: [2:35] Well, thanks, because I really like it, but now I get confused, because I
don't know what to buy to install it.
Rachel: [2:39] All right, well, we'll go back to the store, and I'll show you a whole line
of tile setting products geared for the DIY-er, like yourself. With the right tools and materials,
this'll be simple.
Man 1: [2:47] All right. Well, let's pile in the car.
Heidi: [2:49] OK.
Rachel: [2:49] OK.
Man 1: [2:50] OK, let's get lunch first.
[music plays and women laughing]
Man 1: [2:58] OK, we've got all the tools we need. Well, we still need to stick that
tile onto the wall and caulk it up and stuff. So that's where you come in.
Rachel: [3:05] Yeah, and I'm going to make choosing the adhesives and grout simple.
Heidi: [3:08] OK.
Rachel: [3:09] So we're going to choose from products right here. First of all, we need
the adhesive to set the tile on the wall.
Heidi: [3:14] All right.
Rachel: [3:15] This is a great product right here. This is the TEC Invision universal adhesive.
It's premixed, but it's really high performance, so it's going to make the job really easy.
Heidi: [3:23] And it's just one bucket.
Rachel: [3:23] Just one bucket.
Man 1: [3:24] All in one heavy bucket.
Heidi: [3:26] Oh, that's wonderful.
Rachel: [3:27] And then next, we need to pick out the grout.
Heidi: [3:29] Now wait a minute. So everything is all right here?
Rachel: [3:31] It's all right here, really easy to understand.
Heidi: [3:33] Oh, that's great. Now, do I have to seal it?
Rachel: [3:36] Actually, you don't have to seal this grout. This grout is already stain
resistant. The stain resistance is built right in, so you never have to seal it. Great for
a backsplash.
Heidi: [3:43] Oh, I love it.
Rachel: [3:44] And then finally, you need your caulk, and you have matching caulk colors.
Heidi: [3:46] Oh, colors.
Rachel: [3:48] Yes, yeah, oh...
Ted Brunson: [3:49] Well, I'm going to say vintage white. This is what we're probably
going to want to go with.
Rachel: [3:51] Oh, I don't think you can trust him. You've got to look at this.
Ted: [3:54] Can't trust me. So there's a guide where you can pick out your colors, and I'll
just be right here.
Rachel: [4:00] This is really neat color right here. Now, Ted picked this one out, and it's
a pretty good idea. It's got some green in it. Oh, wait, you know what? What about this
one?
[music plays]
Ted: [4:07] Come on, girls.
Rachel: [4:08] It's just a basic white to be...wait a second.
Ted: [4:12] All right. We're back from the store. We picked up all of our tools and a
dude. We've added one. Rachel, who's this guy?
Rachel: [4:16] This is Tom Plaskota. He's our technical support manager, and he's here
to help us today.
Ted: [4:20] So Tom, you're basically the brains behind this operation.
Man 1: [4:23] I don't know a lot about tiling, but I do know you need to prep the area and
protect this beautiful kitchen, right?
Tom Plaskota: [4:27] Right. The first thing that we're going to want to do is protect
the countertop and the fixtures. Then we're going to want to make sure that we have a
sound and smooth surface for installing our tiles. Then we're ready for tile layout, and
that's the time when we would prepare for any tile cuts that we're going to do.
Heidi: [4:41] Now, some of this tile is going to be cut, then?
Tom: [4:43] It is, but just some minor areas, things like around electrical outlets, perhaps
near our window sill. We may have to do some minor tile cutting.
Ted: [4:50] All right, ladies, the area is prepped. Now it's time to install the tile,
and I see, Rachel, you've got your little pot of gold right here, or actually gray.
Rachel: [4:58] Yeah, well this TEC Invision universal adhesive is going to make this a
breeze.
Heidi: [5:01] OK.
[music plays]
Ted: [5:05] We're combing this, and it's creating those nice ridges, and it's going to create
better adhesion for the tile, right?
Rachel: [5:11] Yes. Better adhesion and also the point is that you're creating nice, even
ridges, which will allow your tile to be flat on the wall.
[music plays]
Ted: [5:22] Rise and shine. It's day number two. As you can see behind us, the tile is
all put up. Nicely done, everyone. Now it's time to grout it, caulk it, and get this thing
finished and make this kitchen working. Tom, time to grout it, and there's a certain way
to do it, right?
Man 1: [5:37] That's right, Ted, and it'll be easy to do with our TEC Invision grout
and caulk.
[music plays]
Ted: [5:49] Team tile has reassembled, we've cleaned up, and you guys look pretty good,
but not as good as this tile job looks. You've got to be really happy.
Heidi: [5:55] I love it. It is fantastic. I didn't know I could do this on my own, so
I want to thank you. It really was a good time.
Ted: [5:59] Now, Rachel, for more information on TEC Invision, where can people go?
Rachel: [6:03] They can buy the products at Lowe's, and they can find more information
and helpful hints at tecinvision.com.
Ted: [6:10] Well, once again, thank you. And you, Heidi, enjoy your kitchen. What's next?
Heidi: [6:14] Bathrooms. Are you ready to go?
Ted: [6:15] How about lunch first, since the kitchen...why don't we get started on lunch?
OK. This has been Designing Spaces. I'm Ted Brunson, and tune in next time. Who knows
what project we'll have?
Debi: [6:26] You know, we're out of time.
David: [6:27] We are. But we accomplished our goal, to bring you the latest and best
for your home and surroundings. I mean, come on. What more could you ask for?
Debi: [6:34] Another show.
David: [6:35] All right. But you'll have to wait until next time. Until then, we have
to say goodbye. I'm David Jones.
Debi: [6:39] And I'm Debi Marie. We are Designing Spaces, and we'll see you soon. Bye bye.
