>> Hi. I'm Ken Collins "For Your
Car."
Today, we're going to look at
drive belts, drive belt
accessories, what we can do to
make your drive belt last a
little longer and maybe be sure
it's okay for that long trip
you're going to get ready to
take.
The first thing we want to look
at is the new way of checking
belts.
You know, we used to twist them
around and look to see if they
had cracks into them or any wear
onto them.
Well, nowadays cracks may not
mean they're bad.
They may be put in the belt for
better wear.
What we use is a device like
this, kind of like a tire wear
checker.
What we're doing is we're just
checking the depth of the groove
of that belt.
As you can see as I level this
up, you can see the top of this
belt checker.
That means this belt was bad and
maybe if it was checked at the
right time, it wouldn't have
broke.
This is a brand new Honda Accord
from our Honda PAC sponsorship
that we do specific training
for.
What I want to show you is I can
pull this belt up, twist it and
I can take my belt gauge and I
can lay it down in there, and I
can see that the gauge fits
inside that groove properly
showing that this is a good
drive belt.
I just want to talk about some
of the things that can cause
premature belt wear.
One would be if you overtighten
the belt, but actually
manufacturers do will actually
will give you a spring tensioner
that actually applies the proper
tension.
It looks something like this and
the belt rides here and this is
actually the spring that applies
the proper tension.
You want to make sure as your
car ages that the undercovers
are there and they're solid
because any debris from the road
splashing up onto your belt that
can cause premature wear.
Also maintenance, oil leaks,
power steering leaks, coolant
leaks, any kind of fluid that
gets on your belt can actually
prematurely wear the belt.
You can also, after time if you
start getting noises out of your
belt, 50, 60,000 miles, you can
use a conditioner like this.
These types of conditioners can
soften the belt and make them
last another 10, 20,000 miles.
