I came to Los Angeles in 1955. From a little town in Louisiana called Opelousas
My cousin stayed on 55th and Long Beach, And my uncle, he's like 3 or 4 years older than
me, he bought him a car. Of course you could buy a car back in those days for $40, $50,
and they were all stick shifts, and he ran out of gas, and we coughed up 26 cent to get
him 2 gallons of gas so he could get home. Well you know in 55, I remember there was a
big red car, that's what they called it, the Big Red Car, from Long Beach to Los Angeles.
Matter a fact; I can't say that I had seen it on television. There wasn't much television
back in those days. I just really enjoyed riding on those Big Red Cars. I remember the
Watts Local and there was another, the Fast Car. What I enjoyed about them is that they
were convenient and cheap, it was 10 cent. They're going to bring the Red Car out of
retirement, have you ever thought of coming out of retirement? Yeah, sometimes. Oh really?
Yeah, I ve been tempted a couple of times. But, I know one thing my Dad said when he
retired. He said, Everyday is Saturday.
